Sabres lose two out of three on weekend By ROBERT RISK Herald Sports Editor Acton Sabres broke a two game losing streak Sunday against Grand Valley keeping the team above the mark during their three day road trip Sabres now 1311 technically were at home Saturday against Bradford but played in Hiilsburgh the organizations se cond game of the season designed to draw fan interest from the rounding area Coach Ken Steen said turnout for the game against the Bulls was good considering the poor weather that evening It was a decent sized crowd especially since it was a pretty snowy night They definitely saw a good game going into overtime as well Steen said he would have preferred to win the match but also indicated the goal scoring for both teams was well executed and his players didnt miss many of their assignments Bradford went up due to a couple of penalties that went against us Im not always happy with the calls the referees make but oi guys kept us In the game by killing off most of them Jason Lucas and Jeff Shevalier notched one goal apiece in the third to tie it up forcing the Bulls to get the winner midway through overtime Friday Sabres visited Orangeville which hasnt lost to Sabres this season and currently leads the league Acton kept things close early entering the second period tied Crushers opened things up shortly after scoring four suc cessive times before Adam Hilts got one shortly before the end of the second Orangeville tends to score in bunches which they did against us With us missing a couple of guys due to injuries and Mark and John Van Dam out due to suspensions it was tougher keeping them out of our end said goalie Greg Powell played well but acknowledged is a tough competi tion particularly at home Jim English and Jamie Curran scored for Acton in the third but Crushers scored three to take the win 73 Sunday Sabres came back with a victory in Grand Valey led by Jeff Shevalier with four goals Paul Larsen formerly a Jr B player from Brampton scored two goals for his new team followed by Jim English Adam Hilts Jamie Curran and Rich Bond each with one goal It was fairly close in the first period with us leading 32 at the end of it won by Red Wings and Terriers Midget Hurricanes came close during Georgetowns 24th annual tournament on the weekend but lost the annual championship to Toronto Red Wings at Arena This year marked the first time both AA and AAA teams were put into the same tournament which worked out well according to organizer Dave Martin With just double A we had a 12 to team format This time we had 20 teams so we used Memorial Arena as well The tournament was also extremely well attended Georgetowns Sunny Acre Farms hosted the event finishing first in its division However the team was defeated in the semi final by Royal York Friday Georgetown defeated Port Perry lost 3 to Streetsville and beat Acton Both Georgetown and Port Perry finished the preliminary rounds with the same 21 record but the hosts advanced based on the tie breaking formula used Mississauga loners won their division and played Waterloo the wildcard entry Mississauga won the game advancing to play Royal York in the AA final Ter ners won the Sunny Acre Farms trophy by managing a victory In AAA Halton went undefeated in its division beating Richmond Hill Vaughan Kings Bame and Black Hawks Hurricanes won the semi final game against Minnesota North Stars fighting back from a 20 deficit to win Haltons Trevor earned first star honors for his hat trick Toronto Red Wings won their division by beating Mississauga North Stars Whitby and Sault Ste Mane Elks Black Hawks put up a fight in the semifinal forcing Red Wings to win the game in overt Martin said the calibre of the play kept things interesting for the fans as well as the hockey scouts that were taking notes The comments from the scouts were very favorable They were pleased we were able to br ing in teams from further away like Sudbury and the Soo Martin said the AAA coaches were also happy the organizers were able to put on a quality tour with only a few months notice with many indicating they would like to return next year Last place Peterborough defeats Georgetown 21 Georgetown Raiders were defeated by Peterborough for the first time this season on Friday dropping a 21 decision on the road The win was the third of the season in 32 games for the base what has brought a change to Peter borough but knew why Georgetown lost We simply didnt put the puck in the net We played well enough to win them but we couldnt get the goals Peterborough led for most of the match scoring their second goal with six minutes remaining After three minutes McFadyen pulled goaltender Jason Nicholson while Peterborough was trying to kill a penalty We scored pretty quick and we got what we thought was the tying goal but it was disallowed by the referee Some of our guys saw it was in before the blew the play dead but the point is we should have won the game earlier and not have to rely on a last minute play McFadyen said management will be looking at a few new faces Tuesday yesterday during practice at With three im port cards open the coach said a number one goaltender and another scorer are at the top of the shopping list Wed like to get an experienc ed who can take the number one position Paul St Pierre has been injured so we could use some help McFadyen said when Acton Sabres sniper Jeff Shevalier plays there is that little bit ex tra the team needs on the at tack Since Shevalier cant play every game the coach said full time scorer should
