Sports- Industrial League Curling Dunlop and Jaws vie for second THE HERALD Wednesday Page Heading into the first week of curling for the new year Jan at the rink there were three match ups which were par ticulariy noteworthy JAWS and the In surance sponsored Rockers team were head tohead contesting for sole possession of second place behind Work That Bodys FitAs- squad La Guys and Hog Liners were squaring off to fight for third place And at the other end of the standings the Boxers and Dead were paired to do battle for the cellar dweller position In the second place contest a significant advantage was not evident until the seventh end of play was completed Up to that stage of the game ends bad counted only single points either way In the seventh Barry Rockers managed to steal two as the JAWS skip Dave Ashbee came up short trying to draw to the four foot to count The final score was 63 for the Dunlop rink La Guys and Hog Liners took a tie into the eighth end of their matchup La Guys got there on five single point ends and the Hog Liners by winning just two ends one by three points and the other by two Coming home the Hog Liners had the hammer and with that advantage Ian MacLeod was able to come away with another two points to take the game In the cellar dweller battle spectators viewed an interesting game Twice the winless Dead had a two point lead But just when it looked like they might eke out their first win the combination of time running out and Rich Eastwood taking a three point end erased those thoughts The Boxers came away with their second victory in a row on a final count a mini streak for this based rink Two games ended in identical scores In the early draw Swimmers defeated Paul Barbers Challengers by this score In the late draw it was Steve Fosters Automatons winn ing by this count over Ken Bucks Kendale Hackers The Lopers foursome got their victory by steady and cagey play especially that of Bob Hirst The Poster rink did it via the big end and the help of a new face Ann Foster The big end was a factor in two other matches as well In one the Boys and The Sign Sliders had a big end but the Sliders big end was a biggie a huge five pointer And this was in a game which started out to be a closely played affair through five ends before both skips decided to gamble Tfie other big end game had the youthful Kendale Eight Enders in contest with the wily Senators Scott Russells Eight Enders only won four of the games eight ends but two of those were enor mous one for five points and one for six The leagues leader Work That Body
