ahead this year but he suggested construction of the arena may be postponed another year beyond 1993 Council must find an ap propriate piece of land and decide how many different ser vices the arena should offer Each additional service adds that much more to the buildings cost Asked how Acton residents would react to the committee decision the Mayor said I dont know Some will be pleased while others will be disappointed he added Acton Councillor Gerald Ren- unlike the mayor is still op timistic the arena could be in cluded in the capital budget Its not a dead issue until council votes on the capital budget this March he explained Mr said the project wouldnt cost the Town any money for at least another year or two if it was included in the 1991 budget By including it in this years budget said Mr Rennie the Town Recreation and Parks Department Director Tom Shepard could apply for provin cial grant money The Town wouldnt see any of that money until 1992 meaning the Town wouldnt have to commit funds until that time he said Mean while the Town could attempt to sell some of its land to raise funds and thereby reduce the impact the arena would have on future tax rates Acton Coun Rick Bonnette con curred with his colleague saying the Town will be required to spend for repairs during the next years to keep the arena up to provincial standards This cost implies it may be more expensive in the long run to main tain the existing arena instead of building a new one he suggested Both Acton councillors were pleased the new Fire Hall will be built this year saying it was for safety reasons There was no ifs buts or maybes about having the new Fire Hall said Coun Bonnette No parking on Maple Ave Regional Planning and Public Works Committee recom mended Wednesday no parking signs should be posted on the north and south side of Maple Avenue between Guelph Street and Trafalgar Road in Georgetown The recommendation will go before Regional council Wednesday for final approval Acton residents support Canadian Gulf effort ByBENDUMMETT The Herald It would appear Acton residents dont share the views of those In Burlington over Canadas involvement in the Per sian Gulf War HaltonPeel MP Garth Turner told those attending a Town Hall meeting at Trinity United Church in Acton Wednesday he en countered a lot of opposition to Canadas participation in the war during a similar meeting in Burl ington the previous night The MP however received the opposite reaction from the sparse crowd attending Wednesdays gathering Audience member Ian Mc- reflected the views of others saying he almost cried when he first heard about the out break of war but if it hadnt hap pened when it did it was only a matter of time before Saddam Hussein carved up the Middle East To prove his point Mr Mc- compared Canadas population of 25 million and its relatively small army to Iraqs population of million and an ar my that is comparable to that of Hitlers in full flight Hes a war manger he said Audience member Bill Drake stated he thought Canada be more committed to the war ef fort I feel embarrassed be a Canadian when we are just mambypambying around com pared to the French British and Americans believe when you start a job you do it to get it done he said Mr Turner countered by ex plaining the French British and Americans have larger armed forces and therefore can commit more resources to the war effort He went on to say Canada has contributed what has been asked of it and the MP predicted we will do more if asked thats what Minister of External Affairs Joe Clark is saying Mr Turner reiterated his sup port for Canadas involvement in the war stating If we expect to enjoy the advantages of being a member of the United Nations and North Atlantic Treaty Organization NATO then we have to be able to pay the price Those in Burlington opposing Canadian involvement in the war did so for either religious or political reasons or because they Oppose the idea of war said Mr Turner Although supportive of the war effort one audience member sug gested some of the countries in the United Nations coalition should partly be blamed for the war Pointing to such countries as Germany France and the United States John said these countries contributed to the size of Husseins war machine by ex porting arms to the country He also said the United States was to oppose Iraqs invasion of Kuwait and yet support Israels occupation of Palestine Its just hypocritical he added Mr Turner agreed it was hypocritical for the world to sup port the resolution concerning the Iraqi invasion and ignore other 30 OFF LENSES Examinations 232 Guelph SL Arranged Behind The Royal Bank on Rd Guelphview Sq Georgetown MP Garth Turner UN resolutions concerning the Palestinians
