response to concerns over poor air quality in portables the Roman Catholic School Board in conjunction with On tario Hydro recently completed the installation of energy effi ventilation units in all of its 78 portables in the system in eluding St Joseph s School Ac ton These new convenient con trol modules provide necessary fresh air to the classrooms and the heat option reduces the cost of providing the required air As part of an ongoing Savings By Design program to improve the energy efficiency of regional schools Ontario Hydro has pro vided a incentive of to directly subsidize the cost of this project A cheque in the amount of this grant which covers approximately of the cost of the air quality ventilation units will be presented to the Roman Catholic School Board at its January 29 Board meeting by Mr Jack Manager Customer Energy Ser vices and Mr Paul Dilda Com Energy Supervisor of Ontario Hydro HamiltonBurl ington Last year the Board was made aware of air quality problems through testing conducted by an external consultant at a number of schools in the region with tables being of particular con In order to reduce present carbon dioxide levels a method of introducing fresh air into the classrooms was required par ticularly winter when windows are generally kept closed The VanEE ECM En vironmental Control Module unit selected was easily retrofit into the existing portables These units meet the fresh air re quirements of the classroom and combine excellent heat recovery and programmable thermostatic controls to minimize the cost of heating this air Ontano Hydro s interest in this project lies in the energy of the new ventilation units By installing units with a heat recovery option which preheats the incoming fresh air with the warmer exhaust air the amount of electric heating required to br ing air to room temperature is significantly reduced Expected School skits presentation Kindergarten students at Harrison Public School Hon to one of
