Canadians buy sell and pay taxes on homes they have no guaranteed right to own Too often towns and cities pass bylaws taking property away from owners with no guarantee of fair compensation Other governments ex propriate land freeze zoning prevent construction or change the rules of ownership sometimes on a political whim And those people who own those properties have no recourse to the courts arguing that their rights were trampled The right to own property is not in the Canadian Constitution It was removed in 1982 for political reasons Now an emerging lion of individuals and major organizations is organizing to have this right restored A December meeting in Ottawa brought together representatives from such groups as the Canadian Estate Association Canadian Chamber of Commerce Institute Canadian Institute of Planners Canadian Homebuilders Association and others along with several Members of Parliament The day long conference on the need to restore property rights and possible courses of action In an atmosphere of tional change the conference heard the time is ripe for average Canadians to be given back this basic right To accomplish that the report of this conference recommends Establishing a Registry of Support kind of nation wide petition so average Canadians can say clearly they want the right to own their own homes and properties Making submissions to both the Spicer Commission studying Canada future and the Parliamentary committee study ing Constitutional amendment stressing the need for restoring this right The building of a national coalition with the goal of cing MPs and the government so that property rights are includ in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms In December the most power group of organizations ever assembled to discuss property rights concluded that today s situation must change Now an action plan has been outlined When Canadians sit down at the table to redraft Canada Con which now appears in evitable the hand of average Canadians should be felt Our right to own property should be restored Our right to be fairly compensated if govern take it away should be pro tected Until that happens the Charter of Bights and Freedoms is complete flawed and dangerous For more information call Constituency Office 180066M322 8734673 Ot Office 613 992 5266 FOR ASSISTANCE WITH ALL TYPES OF MORTGAGE FINANCING RESIDENTIAL
