Rebel swimmers third best in province Georgetown- District High School Rebels senior swim team repeated last years success with a third place finish at the Ontario finals held at the on Friday Rebel girls team placed third and the boys finished fourth to combine for the bronze medal finishing ahead of 143 other schools in the province With the girls racking up points and the boys getting 120 Rebels points placed them in third behind first place Kennedy Collegiate from Windsor and arch rivals Queen Elizabeth Park from Oakville Georgetown defeated in the Halton finals by eight points on Feb Leading the way was Curry who finished first in both metre freestyle and earned personal best times in 50 metre freestyle 28 and 100 metre freestyle 02 44 Curry also teamed with Jenny Ryan Glaser and Knstin Herner to win the 200 metre freestyle relay breaking a GDHS record Top finisher for the boys was Brett Gillett who took home the breaststroke Gillett also helped teammates Glen Oomen Bruce Jakes and Scott Hamilton place third in the 200 metre medley relay Saturday in the open meet against dub swimmers many of them nationally ranked Rebels met with moderate success All four relay teams Downtown Georgetown 8 77 Perkins honored at Heritage dinner Gerry Perkins honored as this years recipient of the Georgetown Hockey Heritage Award was stuck a penalty box of his own while his friends took shots at him during the awards dinner at the Holy Cross Auditorium Monday night The longtime Halton Hills resl dent and diehard sports sup porter was recognized for his con tribution to hockey most notably his committment to the Georgetown Referee Associa tion which he helped found in 1957 and is still directing today Perkins was roasted by several old friends which included tional Hockey League director of officiating Bryan Lewis and former Georgetown Raider general manager Bob Hooper Lewis who began his career under the care of Perkins gave a hilarious rendi tion of This is Your Life using actual NHL rule book infractions to relate how Perkins and his wife Betty began their relation ship Most of Lewis story is too colorful to relate here but his ending There was occasionally rule because he t see well enough to pass the exam Jake Poulstrup a player on the Sunny Acre Farms Midgets hockey team and also one of Perkins referees poked fun at his boss s habit of walking off with pens after signing game sheets by presenting him with a four foot high pen Halton Hills Herald newspaper publisher Bob Malcolmson was also in attendance to present Perkins with his portrait which will photo b Risk Sabres playoff hopes dimmed after losing two to Crushers By ROBERT RISK Herald Sports Editor Acton Sabres are down in their best of seven playoff Mid Ontario Jr C final playoff series after losing Friday in Orangeville and Sunday at home After defeating Schomberg Cougars in six games Sabre coach Ken Steen said he hoped his team would use the victory to boost them to an opening game win on the road However Crushers dominated the start of the game leading 7 1 after two periods of play We won the third ing two goals but we werent there in the first part of the game After we pulled Greg Powell Jim Manttone shut them out but we were down by too many goals to come back Crushers scored three goals in the first period before Sabres connected for a goal at 05 Craig Cullen scored assisted by Jason Sawyer and Adam Hilts continued to dominate in the middle frame scoring four unanswered markers Jeff Sbevalier and Adam Hilts scored goals but It wasnt enough as Crushers took the first game Sabres stepped up the pressure the second game played Sun day afternoon at home but had their hopes dashed when Crushers scored the winner with post seconds remaining in regulation time It was a tough loss definitely a game we could have won Los ing was bad enough but it would have been a little better if had managed to go into overtime said Steen JIMMANTIONE Orangeville had opened the scoring at 10 59 of the first period but Acton kept the doors closed on any further attempts by the visitors Sabres got things rolling in he second with two goals just 15 seconds apart and looked as though they might pull away Acton tied things up 1 when Mark BroomersmaB wraparound attempt rebounded out to Cullen who chipped it in over a sprawling Crusher goaltender Sabres took the lead when Tim McDonalds shot was poked loose from under the net- minders pads by Paul Acton took the play to Orangeville after that looking for a bigger lead but their momentum was broken up by penalties one which led to Crushers tying the game at 2 Both sides traded scoring chances but Maotione kept Sabres in the game until he was beaten within the games closing minute Orangeville added an empty net marker with 29 seconds remaining Both teams faced off at Orangeville last night Tuesday but results were not available at press time Game four will be played Friday in Acton at 00
