is increasing at the rate of every minute Wilson told Page the second cheque will be cashed and the 1200 deposited into the govern ments new debt reduction fund Contd on Page Landry questions council sincerity By BEN DUMMETT The Herald Local environmentalist Rita Landry is questioning the sinceri ty of local councillors belief a hearing under the provinces En vironmental Protection Act is the fairest way to determine if Transfer Limited in Georgetown should be permitted to double the amount of garbage it handles has requested persmission from the Ministry of Environment to accept 300 tonnes of garbage daily from anywhere in the province instead of the cur rent amount of 150 tonnes it cur rently handles In considering the application the has asked Halton Hills Council to comment on the proposal Town General Committee which is comprised of local coun cil members recommended last Monday in the name of fairness that the MOE hod a hearing to determine if the request should be met The recommendation goes before Council for final approval this Monday Ms Landry said during an in terview Wednesday the recom mendation approved by General Committee lacks specifics to justify the request That means the will place little if no em phasis on the Towns position she said The recommendations passed by General Committee states local environmental groups POWER Protect Our Water Environmental Resources and ICE Incineration Counteracts the Environment and other in dividuals have expressed many An Inside Look Beat P2 Peoples Features Forum Environment Opinion P11 Seniors P5 Sports P1720 Food Parenting Tins Editorial Youth Page Poets Comer P10 Classified Weirs World P10 concerns with the Leferink ap plication therefore be it resolved that the be advised that the Town of Halton Hills request a hearing The recommendation as writ ten said Ms Landry implies the Town hasnt taken a position on the application The Town would have only taken a position if it had given concrete reasons ex plaining why the MOE should hold a hearing she explained Ms Landrys claim appears to be supported by comments made by John Budz the District Officer for the HaltonPeel District of the Mr said during an inter view Wednesday a hearing is granted if it is justified with specific facts such that the ap plication contravenes a Town bylaw Before making its recommen dation General Committee rais ed concerns that if the applica tion was approved there could be a problem with truck traffic However Town Engineering Director Bob Austin said Wednes day the Towns request will only be comprised of the resolution Mr Budz said traffic is a legitimate concern but for it to be considered as a specific concern a reference relating to truck traf fic must be included in the Towns request for a hearing With respect to another Leferink request to accept gar bage from Orangeville Mr Budz has recommended to his director that the application be approved despite Town Councils objection to the proposal The Towns op position didnt carry much weight because no reason justify ing its objection wag given he said Contacted Wednesday Mayor Miller said if it was his deci sion he would oppose the applica tion outright But were Coun cil only a commenting agency the MOE make the final deci sion he said Since the Town is only a com menting agency Mayor Miller said a hearing is the proper way
