Herald photo Commission plans to study conflict of interest laws A provincially appointed con sulfation committee wants to hear what the people of Ontano have to say about municipal con flict of interest laws The committee appointed by Municipal Affairs Minister Dave Cooke will hold public meetings across the province in April and early May The committees task is to recommend ways in which municipal conflict of interest legislation could be improved to better assure the people of On tano of the integrity of their municipal politicians and staff The committee is to report to the Minister by the end of July so new legislation can be introduced in the fall session The committee will look at all aspects of the issue including such questions as does the current legislation adequately determine when a conflict exists should the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act extend to local government employees should conflict rules extend to gifts and benefits received because of position or office should local politicians be re quired to disclose significant assets and interests which may create conflicts do the current rules deal ade quately with elected officials undertaking additional revised regulation now makes it mandatory for every wholesale and retail outlet selling hazardous chemical pesticides to have a full time certified vendor responsible for operating the outlet in accordance with the Act and regulations Another section of the regula tion strengthens and clarifies the standards for the storage of chemical pesticides To prevent accidental contamination of other products storage areas must be used exclusively for pesticides and must be kept lock and posted with warning signs Respiratory equipment and pro tective clothing must be kept close at hand and emergency telephone numbers such as police fire poison control and spills action centre must be pro minently displayed Pesticides must not be left unattended in parked vehicles unless these vehicles are locked or inaccessl ble to the public It is anticipated that the Grower s Certification Course which has been voluntary will be made mandatory Growers will then be required to show proof of
