season curl ing for the Industrial curlers at the local North ice palace Teams are eyeing their places in the standings and their next op ponents to get some sense of whom they are going to be up against when they head into the final starting on April After this weeks thrills and spills the standings picture looks clearer at the top end The combination of a narrow Insurance Rockers win and a close Work That Body Fiddle loss leaves the Rockers in a nearly unbeatable position go ing into their final pairing of the second draw Their lead is a seemingly healthy 325 points Rockers squeaked by a tenacious Hog Liners crew in a gritty game which had the Hog Liners stealing four of the con tests eight ends It was only two three pointers and a near perfect eight end come around by vice Ted Rombough which pulled Rockers through for the win In their game Work That Body were facing two bad omens before a single rock was thrown The regular skip Ken Irwin was down with pneumonia and their opponents La Guys were about to have their rejuvenated medicine man Tom Reed calling the shots After a blanked first end the Reed black magic went to work Pour in the second and a pair in the fourth had the La Guys ahead and had Rob Burns and his mates wondering just what they were up against The WTBers needed a rally and over the next three ends they managed to cut Reeds lead to a single point However In the closing end Reed mystified everyone With the games last shot he came out narrow giving himself no chance at coming around the guard to the four foot but his shot somehow found the opening at the top of the house and he grazed in for the shot With all in wonderment he had a win These games were not the only source of excitement JAWS and Swimmers provided entertainment as did the chup of The Boys and Bill Smith Auto In the affair the oppos ing skips and McCor- kept it close down to the wire Points were systematically taken end by end such that it was a Lopers lead heading home In the eighth it was a crowded house that Ashbee faced with skips rocks and almost no way of getting to the Loners counter Two tries failed and the Swim mers took the game by a 53 final tally Norval BoysBill Smith Auto contest went much the same way as the game for five ends In the sixth however Norval Boys seized op portunities and broke out in front with four Dave front end of Bryan Reynolds and Ian Arnold showed maturity for curlers with very little ex perience under their belts The final score was In other games the outcomes were not as close Kendaie Eight dominated the Sign Shoppe Sliders taking the first six ends and closed with a victory The Challengers won handily with a score over Dead Hackers produced the same count in their match up with The Boxers a game in which Naomi Patterson struggl ed Lastly Automatons who have been curling exceptionally well and lead the B division in this second draw outpointed Senators 74 An early Senators lead of after four ends was swept Hotham Scott Ellis Ryan Bobor and Brent McCIung forcing the Chinguacousy netminder to sparkle The third period belonged to Tyler as the Lumberman came up big At the Mark Tyler made an arm save to deny Chinguacousy scoring opportunity Tyler main tained his shutout with a glove save with six seconds remaining on the clock with a Chinguacousy forward staring him down Georgetown earned a 20 vic tory over Oshawa Shoppers Drug Mart on Saturday in the first round of the 24th Annual Streetsville International Novice Tournament The first period was highlighted by Jay Campbell Jamie Larocque and Matt Hotham providing pressure on the team The period ended Matt scored at the mark of the second period from Bryan Suttard to bring the score to lo Jay Hayes scored with 54 seconds left assisted by Ryan to bring the period to an end at 20 The third period saw Oshawa try desperately to find the twine but the tandem of Carter and turned them aside for the shutout Lumbermen notes The Georgetown Major Novice team will play at Maple Leaf Gardens this Saturday in the Annual Timmy Tyke Hockey Tourna ment The Georgetown hockey club raised in excess of for the Easter Seal Society by selling tickets in
