build in Halton isn t so high it would drive them out of the area predicts Halton Hills Chamber of Commerce General Manager Doug Pennce Mr Pennce was responding to a Regional Finance and Administration recommendation calling for Halton to charge developers per square foot for residential buildings The committee made the after a public meeting Tuesday the third such meeting on the issue of development charges The recommendation will go before Regional Council April 17 for final consideration staff originally propos ed the development charge be in creased from 85 cents to 80 per square foot During the previous two public meetings developers balked arguing the in crease would send them packing Halton charges developers a fee for non residential construe ton to help pay for services such as roads and sewage systems that need to accompany any new development Mr believes that Regional Council will approve the newly recommended 1 10 per square foot fee Although the fee if approved won t dissuade developers from taking their business elsewhere it will force them to spend less on the buildings they construct as com for the fee increase said Mr He qualified his prediction say nobody will know for certain what will happen until the economy turns around At the fee would cover 39 per cent of the Region s cost to pay for services that accompany any development The remaining 61 per cent of the cost for servic would be collected through the general tax rate said Director of Budgets and finance Dave The cents and proposed fees represented opposite ex tremes If the charge was 85 cents per square foot per cent of accompanying services must be collected through the general tax levy while the fee would cover the entire cost of servicing said Mr According to Mr Birkett the 1 will cost Halton residents million over a year to cover the cost of servicing for develop ment During Tuesday public meeting Burlington Mayor and committee member Roly Bird proposed the fee be set at per square foot meaning development in Halton would on cost the taxpayer an extra million per year His motion was defeated Developers appeanng before the committee still think the charge is too high said Mr But since they adamant ly oppose an increase to 80 they recognize the 10 to be a suitable compromise he explain ed Assuming Council approves the recommended increase a com mittee compnsed Regional staff councillors members of the public and developers will be formed to study possible future development charge changes he said The increase will be in place for a maximum of two years during which time it could be changed based on any recom mendation put forth by the new committee explained Mr Birkett Brush fire Halton Hills firefighters were called out Wednesday morning to
