School in Acton is leading the way in teaching students about the en vironment and administering conservation techniques For months the school has been actively recycling and com posting Starting April 22 the school is embarking on Project LIFE or Little Inspires Fondness for the Environment Paul teacher at the school instrumental in organizing Project LIFE said its a month of celebration for students teachers and parents on the joys of the en vironment Through the project he hopes students teachers and parents will have an increased awareness of the environment and their ability to impact on it We wanted there to be awareness of the problem and make people realize they can take action too said Mr Hynds whos now finalizing the ac tivities going on during the month Events begin April which is Earth Day Students and teachers will be out planting trees on school property Over the next few days students will enjoy performances by profes sional troupes with an en vironmenta theme In the first days of May conser vationists from the Mountsberg Conservation Area will release a bird of prey thats been injured and nursed back to health or removed from a dangerous en vironment like the airport During pitchin week from May 612 the school will concen trate on promoting lun ches and collect garbage on school property Class visits to Terra Cotta Con servation Area begin May while Ontario Hydro will visit the school May 14 to teach students about safety and energy conser vation The activity month culminates May 22 with a grand Open House reception from to 830 Displays from the HaltonPeel Naturalists POWER Pollution Probe Town of Halton Hills Region Atomic Energy Canada Ministry of the Environ ment and Ontario Hydro will be on view for students and parents Officials such as Regional Chairman Peter Town of Halton Hdls Mayor Russ Miller Halton Regional Councillor Rick Bon nette Area Superintendent Dave Katz Board of Education for Halton Hills school trustee Arlene Bruce and town councillors Norm Elliott and Gerald Rennle will also be present at the open house Mr said parents can also view traditional school pro jects and witness plays and per by students I believe this project will real ly make a difference to the en vironment said Mr They the students appreciate the wonders and diversity of our environment and feel they are a part of it The children are very en thusiastic and willing to do anything to help the natural world around them he said They re keen to reduce but they need a lot of assistance Two projects stemming from environmental month the students are eager to start are stream rehabilitation and a schoolyard wildlife garden The stream rehabilitation pro ject involves the planting of trees shrubs and vegetation along the edge of the stream running across River Street to stop erosion and create a more natural looking stream bank The schoolyard project will be an ongoing effort said Mr Hynds involving students from all grades A section of the school playground will be devoted to a wildlife garden where Oak Mountain Ash Maple Apple and Evergreen trees along with various shrubs and perennials such as Asters Lavender Primrose
