Council Briefs THE HERALD Wednesday April Pag Downtown Georgetown meter situation under review Hills Council decided Monday to establish a committee comprised of councillors and downtown Georgetown business people to determine if the park ing meter fees in the Georgetown Central BIA area should be in creased Council made its decision after hearing BIA General Manager Margaret Vint argue against the meter fee being increased from cents per hour to 50 cents per hour On the basis of Ms Vints com ments Town council also decided to direct the newlyformed com mittee to determine if a warning system should be part of the parking meters in the BIA area The warning system would ap pear after the expiration of time on the meter allowing for an addi tional 10 minutes grace period before the car would be ticketed Councils resolution also in cluded that the parking meters located in the Wesleyan Street Lot be removed Traffic lights urged Saying that the elderly han dicapped and the young are afraid to cross Highway from Street in Georgetown because of the speeding traffic travelling along Ewing Street resident Lena Emmerson urged Town council to install traffic lights at the Street Highway 7 intersection In response several coun cillors agreed there was a safety problem at the intersection and as a result council directed staff to investigate if traffic lights or a crosswalk should be installed at the intersection Complains of Utter Cook Street resident John Lind say of Acton told Town coun cillors Monday of several in cidents in which those working on the construction of the Cobblehill Home Cooperative development project on Cook Street are litter ing his and other surrounding properties and generally show ing complete disregard for the area Mr Lindsay told councillors how a fence surrounding the development came unhinged and the wind blew the fence into his A month ago Mr Lindsay was told the developer would pay for window replacement cost However no compensation has been forthcoming said Mr Lind say Town councillors directed staff to contact the developer im mediately to ensure the site is cleaned and Mr Lindsay is rein- Bylaw criticized Calling the Towns sign bylaw discriminatory Doug president of Halton Hills com pany Marzo Glove Ltd through a letter urged council to either establish a fairer sign bylaw eliminate the bylaw altogether or temporarily suspend enforce ment of the bylaw until the bylaws ramifications on the local business community can be determined In the letter Mr states that while he was recently charg ed with violating the sign bylaw other businesses have not been charged The Towns policy of on ly investigating bylaw infractions upon receiving a public com plaint is unfair and discriminatory he states As a result of the charge and being forced to remove the sign the Maple Avenue reconstruction design delayed by residents concerns The preferred road reconstruc tion design for Maple Avenue in Georgetown wont unveiled to he public as scheduled this April Hills councillors learn ed Monday Town Engineer Bob Austin said the unveiling has had to be postponed in order to address concerns raised by three Georgetown residents over the proposed road reconstruction design Two of the main concerns rais ed by John Minns Ashley Rnson and Paul Robinson centre on two abandoned landfill sites located in proximity to the road reconstruction and the resulting storm water drainage from development surrounding the road reconstruction The development under ques- Disabled recognized The Office for development can only go ahead once road reconstruction on Maple Avenue gets the green light The first phase of construc tion which would be comprised of 175 housing units is scheduled to be completed by the end of this October However Town Engineer Peter Linn said if public concerns cant be resolved within the month the construction comple tion date for the 175 units will have to be pushed back Mr Linn said the Towns engineering department is scheduled to meet with residents today Wednesday to determine if the concerns raised can be resolved Its Mr Linns hope a new date for the unveiling of the preferred road reconstruction design can be revealed within the next two to three weeks According to the brief submit ted to Town engineers by Mr Minns Mr and Mr Robinson the three suggest there could leakage from the land fills as a result of the road reconstruction However Mr Linn said there is a ravine separating Maple Avenue and the two abandoned landfills That means even if road reconstruction disturbed the landfills any leakage would have to climb one side of the ravine to come in contact with any of the Kingsmill development Mr Linn said this kind of happening is next to impossible Also stated in the brief is the claim that increased storm water runoff into the Credit River once road reconstruction takes place and the development goes ahead would be harmful to the river Mr Linn countered by saying that the Credit Valley Conserva tion Authority approved the in creased levels of storm water discharge Mr stressed Monday the concerns raised by himself Mr Minns and Mr Robinson are legitimate The group is not at tempting to prevent the develop ment from going ahead he said The brief submitted by the three also acknowledged that road reconstruction of Maple Avenue will improve the roads safety The three men also questioned the process the Town is following to ensure concerns surrounding the road reconstruction are met before the Town approves work on Maple Avenue Mr Austin told councillors that as far as he was concerned the Town was following the process for road reconstruction approval according to the appropriate On tario Ministry of Environment legislation Concerni the now cancelled public meeting to unveil the road reconstruction preferred design the brief suggests that the meeting wasnt properly adver tised in the local media In other words the
