Page 10 THE HERALD May 1 1991 Youthful insights In celebration and recognition of Education Week the Halton Hills Herald decided to produce a special supple ment geared towards students and their views not just on the education system hut on a number of varied and even controversial issues Several editorial meetings failed to reach a consensus on how the supplement was to be produced and presented so it was decided to approach two schools with the idea and judge the reaction Centennial Middle School and Park Public School of Georgetown were approached with the idea and students and teachers responded with such overwhelm ing enthusiasm that in fact the whole concept of the plementthat appears in this Wednesdays Herald was revamped to accomodate what obviously was the stu dents wishes a forum for their viewpoints on certain issues seen through the eyes of young students The Herald is also using the special supplement as a pilot project to bring students and their views into the mainstream of the newspaper After all it is their world too that we are writing about praising and criticizing as the situation arises TKe Herald intends to approach other Halon Hills in the future and offer their students the same opportunity to express their opinions Going over the material the young students submitted should allow for serious secondthought by adults who assume wrongly that youngsters either are not aware or similarly simply dont care about the traumatic changes that appear to be occurring almost daily not on ly in Canadian society but in societies throughout the world Views expressed on drinking and driving the environ ment pollution agriculture drugs and yes the sug gestion of yearround schooling show not only an awareness of the issues by students but a concern that almost borders on a demand that these issues be ad dressed by the adults in positions to do something about the concerns of the youths These opinions should not be dismissed out of hand by adults who might variously view them cynically as cries in the wilderness or reject them as simple verbal of youths with nothing bet ter to do The views are insightful They are obviously straight- fromtheheart insights into what youths of today think about the world as it is now being run by supposed responsible adults and a plea to these same adults to leave something for the young to inherit Through world wars depressions famine plague and other similar instances of mans inhumanity to man it has always been the youth who have suffered the most Perhaps it really is time to let the to the Criminal Code shows how useless the Ontario Film Review Board has become After he NDP has relaxed the Boards mandate and decided not to limit hardcore pornography videos of violence and degradation can freely enter the Ontario market although illegal according to the Criminal Code It shows how low the standards of the current Ontario govern ment really are The direct rela tionship between violent por nographic material and violence against women has been proven If the NDP concerned about women as they say they are would it not be in everyones interest for them to cooperate with
