entertainment or perhaps just jolly youre cor rect Of course the real reason is that the church is renovating the existing church and building an addition Bringing Second City to town is a fund raising event and St Johns hopes to sell out the tickets as three previous Second City engagements to Haltorr Hills have done The people of Halton Hills love Second City And no wonder They have a special brand of humour where poking fun at our political social and cultural ac tivities is a specialty Theres certainly plenty of material for them these days To say this is a popular group is an understate ment When trying to book a per formance we were given a choice of only 2 weekday even ings in a fourmonth period The Second City was bom in in Chicago Illinois Specializing in improvisational comedy using few props and costumes the ensemble of five actors lampoons our modern lives Improvising on suggestions from the audience during the improv sets held nighjly after the regular show the cast works amplifies and refines those ideas into scenes for the next revue The Second City quickly won over and critics Fourteen years later The Se cond City came to Canada and set up house in a one-hundred-year- old f irehall in downtown Toronto Continuing the tradition for over 17 years and 30 successful revues The Second City in Toronto now boasts a highly respected and recognized resident company at the Old a National Tour ing Company a public workshop program and a lengthy and famous list of alumni As The Second Citys profile grew in Toronto cast members began to move on to other careers in film and television In order to replenish the supply of qualified talent the National Touring Com pany was set up using some of the graduates from the highly suc cessful public workshop program held at the Second City A proven success the Touring Company has provided an invaluable source of talent as well as suc ceeding in its own right touring communities resorts recapture some of the magic of last Springes Holland Tour Only this time A Dale Wood who con ducts both choirs has selected Vaughan Williams majestic Sea Symphony to mark the occasion The work is worthy of the one hundred voices which will come together in concert A Dale Wood is a well known local musician who thrives on Vaughan Williams He teaches piano organ and voice and has conducted the Georgetown Choir since He graduated from the University of Torontos School of Music and has extensive credits singing and directing much of the choral repertoire Along with his work with the two choirs he also directs the choir of Grace United Church in Brampton and finds time to compose and accompany select professional performers Christopher Dawes the com bined choirs accompanist in Holland will make a return visit with the combined choirs Chris a displaced maths and computer science enthusiast blind sided by music while at Queens traded calculus and functions for more worldly crochets and He is an accomplished soloist and the Music Director of All Saints Church Kingsway The choir think of him as family having seen him hold up the Canadian end on some long evenings with some boisterous young Dut chmen The choirs love singing with Chris Another old friend returns to our local stage Bruce Armstrong will sing the baritone solo Bruce a one time resident of Georgetown sang with St Johns Choir and the Georgetown Choral Society He studied music at Wilfrid under Victor Martin Bruce also sang with the Mendelsshon Choir for years and has racked up a long list of credits included The Messiah Mozarts Requiem as well as show music like and Bess Bruce will be joined by Dale Woods find of last winter Susan Murley will join the Choirs again to sing the soprano solo Susan is also a graduate of the University of Toronto in Vocal Performance She studied under Patricia Kern Susan has started building her repertoire with some very challenging pieces Bachs Mass in and Williams Susan Chris Dawes will marry shortly A massed choir taps an emo tional nerve which unfailingly stirs the soul whatever the reper toire If havent heard voices sing their hearts out cap tured
