in New York City in He studied piano and organ and at tended William College where he majored in music After he studied theory and com position with Milton Babbitt In 1953 he went to Hollywood where he wrote the scripts for the Top per television series He returned to New York and composed the music for Girls of Summer A year later he wrote the lyrics for Leonard Bernstein s musical West Side Story and later for the musical Gypsy by Jule Styne In he conquered Broadway as composer and lyricist with A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum a musical based on comedies by the Roman playwright It ran for 964 performances His next musical Anyone can Whistle in 1964 bombed at the box office but he continued with a remarkable str ing of musicals that have won him world acclaim Company in A Little Night Music in Pacific Overtures in 1976 Sweeny Todd in 1979 and Sunday in the Park with George in 1984 From Forum to Sunday in the Park Sondheim has fashion ed musical
