BOONSTOPPELPOT The Herald The number of sexual and physical assault incidents Halton Regional Police are investigating at Ernest C Drury school for the deaf in Milton has risen to five said Detective Services for children teens and their families living Georgetown and Acton need proving according to a Com Strategic Plan for children and teens scheduled to go before Regional council today Wednesday for consideration According to the report in itiated by s Children s Services Coordinating and Ad Group there is a lack of services particularly mental health services for children in the Georgetown and Acton Com munities The few services that are available cannot meet the ex needs and are generally not based on their communities The report goes on to indicate Halton wide agencies and governments at all levels have a responsibility to assist in the development of services in North To address the lack of services in Georgetown and Acton the report recommends a multi service centre be established in Georgetown and the Acton Social Service and Information Centre be expanded Halton s Social Services Com missioner Bonnie said day the Georgetown centre would house the various social services offered in the community under one roof In this way better coor dination between services could be offered to the public explain edMs According to the report has existed in Acton for a number of years and is recognized as a key source of services However expanded and new programs are required within the Centre to serve the needs of the children and teens in the community The recommendation for Georgetown and Acton as well as several others for different areas of the Region arose from in formation provided by social vice and educational profes sionals and parents and teens From the collected data 37 recommendations were made and the plan is to implement pro grams over the next 10 years bas ed on the recommendations said Ms However implcmen of any programs will de pend on available funds she said Research showed the key issues among Georgetown teens children families and social ser vices professionals are as follows the necessity for mental health improved awareness net working and coordination of resources improved transportation vices a need for more social vices In Acton the key issues include more Mental Health and Behavioral services the issue of parenting more housing According to the report of the parents who responded to a tionnaire for the study 91 per cent indicate the Georgetown community was a good or very good place to raise their children The percentage was per cent for Acton parents Asked the same question per cent of the Georgetown teens who responded said that they liked somewhat or liked very much in Georgetown Com paratively 75 per
