THE HERALD Wednesday May 22 1991 Page SB Soccer field snags cleared up season gets going Lets talk fields first The of ficially announced starting date was the week of May 20 Tradi tionally the starting day is much earlier When I received notification of the start I contacted the town representative and was advised that this was town policy and that the question of the starting date would be talked over with department chiefs I spoke about youth and senior mens opening and could not vouch for ladies at the time My call to the department on May 8 confirmed the opening day for youth on May but not the senior men on May In between times the soccer club had made its own contacts with the town and established the opening day as OK A decision on the senior men Inter County was to have been intimated by May 9 and was not It was not until May 13 that my next call established that it would be in order to commence that night and week Apologies were made and accepted for the over sight of lack of contact At no time was there any men tion of a printer problem being the cause of permit and permis sion difficulties in any of my con tacts until I saw the departmen tal reply to last weeks column was in fine condi tion was in fine con dition in other words the sur face was cut and levelled However was a disgrace untouched Of course soccer peo ple were partly at fault We should not have concluded that all fields were ready without in spection Oh yes the town was to carry out an inspection on May I was informed and if it was surely the unsafe state of Alcott would have been noticed As it was no games took place However the field is now ready for play The problem also caused delay in advising game officials and we were in short supply Less than hours in some cases is not good enough Visiting teams from Mississauga and Streetsville had journeys for nothing and that makes us all look bad very bad Had we sufficient fields for use remembering that soccers nor mal play is field use for games only we might have been able to provide alternatives Alter natives which are safe to play on of course Another major outdoor sum mer sport was the subject of a re cent editorial and it was stated that there were only enough facilities for two or three sessions per team per week Would that soccer had that luxury Rugby has to make do with what they receive for use and this is another growing sport in the area and country The Canadian entry in the recent Scottish Borders sevens came away victorious and the national team reached the final of a recent international tourney After all this we are underway so let us enjoy Georgetowns senior men have been drawn away to Niagara Falls in the first preliminary round of the Ontario Cup It is on ly two seasons since the town made the final That playing squad has gone and the team is rebuilding The task of going for ward will not be easy it can be done The is June 2 A much different story tor the under girls as they do not play until July and are home to Hamilton Spar ta who did quite well last year The girls found it hard going in their first season in the com petitive ranks and so shall boys this season I venture It encouraging to see the return of competitive play to town soccer There was an attempt to revive the senior girls competitive squad and due to some technical misunderstandings the team did not go However the team will be in place for next year Inter County results from last Wednesday are Meteor 5 Mariners United Villa 3 Streetsville in the first division and Blazers Old ft APPLE AutoClass
