libraries would be closed for the entire week of June to The reasons for the closure are first to save some of the money required by the recent cut to the staff budget and second to facilitate the reorgamzation of the collection and service desks which is designed to control per costs over the longer term by reducing the number of people required to staff the library The construction and moving of collection and equipment is substantial and cannot be comphshed over a weekend It will totally disrupt the ability to serve the public at either branch because the computer system will be out of service during the reconstruction The Library is moving into a self service mode tor most of its operation reserving staff assistance for reference readers advisory and other more complex information needs As a result of the changes library users will find it easier lo select and borrow most print and print materials As people become acquainted with the powerful new computerized catalogues they will be far more successful in finding the informa lion and materials they want Chair Jay Jackson emphasized that the Board is concerned to maintain the best possible dard of public service despite
