page THE WEEKEND OUTLOOK Friday June 21 erink proposal gets cold shoulder from Region Halton Region Planning and Public Works Committee recom mended Wednesday Leferink Transfer Station In Georgetown should not be permitted to in crease the amount of waste it cur rently handles The recommendation will go before Regional Council this Wednesday for final considera tion Committee made its recom mendation after Barbara President of local environmental group Protect Our Water En vironmental Resources POWER argued it would be a mistake to permit the transfer station to handle more garbage Ms told committee members permitting to handle more waste would discourage other communities from trying to reduce the amount of waste they generate Leferink currently has permis sion to take garbage produced in Hills and Milton The transfer station now wants per mission to receive garbage from anywhere in Ontario The provinces Ministry of En vtronment is the ultimate authority in deciding whether Leferink will be permit ted to accept garbage from throughout Ontario To assist in making its decision the MOE re quested Halton Region comment on the transfer stations applica tion Ms Halsall argued the easier It is for Ontario municipalities to ship garbage outside their boun daries the less incentive there is for the communities to reduce their respective waste streams As part of the committees recommendation staff was directed to inform the MOE that a hearing under the provinces Environmental Protection Act should be held concerning the application According to the staff report application is dent with regard to information on the impact of increased truck traffic that could be created if the application was approved The report also indicates if Leferinks service area was ex panded then Halton waste disposal system could be negatively impacted Local libraries begin summer programs Registration begins Tuesday and continues throughout the summer for the Halton Hills Public Libraries
