quarterly Employment Outlook Survey conducted by Manpower Tern Services the world s largest temporary help company The forecast came after inter views with over 1 companies throughout the country A total of per cent indicated they would add employees during the third quarter of the year an increase from the per cent of three ths ago but still considerably less than similar quarters since the recession A seasonally high per cent plan to reduce their workforce compared to 16 per cent in the second quarter of and 10 per cent a year ago The present net hiring strength of 10 per cent is the lowest third quarter level since 1982 Manpower s Vice President and General Manager Maureen reported that there was little tangible cause for op timism The best gains are in the Maritime prounces and those are areas of high seasonal ment Ms Quinn acknowledged that the present outlook is a clear improvement over that of three months ago but we expect so much more in the summer The present national out appears a bit closer to scar expectations although sion continues to dampen hinng enthusiasm Those intending to increase staff levels in the up coming third quarter amounted to 23 per cent of more than companies contacted while 13 per cent plan staff reductions Another per cent will remain at existing levels and per cent are uncertain of hiring plans The national results by in dustry are MINING The mining industry is Canada s employment leader for the third quarter as 32 per cent plan higher levels Consumer warning The Product Safety Branch of Consumer and Corporate Affairs Canada has alerted consumers that the upper bed of certain wooden bunk beds can collapse onto the lower one with the risk of serious injury to the child below The Product Safety Branch has received complaints about close calls as a result of the upper bed falling on the lower one The top posts of such bunk beds are secured to the lower ones by wooden pegs or dowels that fit into holes drilled into the upper and lower posts In the bunk beds that are dangerous the pegs that hold the upper and lower posts together ire ton short they barely extend ihc upper post As a result the top posts are not securely held onto lower ones and can slide off The top bed can then crash down causing serious in jury to the child in the lower bed Consumers using wooden bunk beds purchased between and 1990 should examine their pro duct to see if the pegs are long enough to hold the posts solidly together If longer pegs are need ed consumers should obtain them from the store where the bed was purchased Consumers are reminded that children under six years of age should never be placed in the up per bed of bunk beds Children should also be taught not to use bunk beds as play structures For more of the recent years CONSTRUCTION Always high on the list of third quarter employers construction companies are again among the leaders although at their lowest summer activity level since the recession For the third quarter per cent indicate they will seek additional workers and per cent intend to reduce their workforce MANUFACTURING DURABLE GOODS In this sector which is con an important indicator in any economic recovery the outlook is negative for the fourth consecutive quarter Only per cent plan hirin increases while per cent are still facing staff cut backs MANUFACTURING DURABLE GOODS durable goods manufac are more op timistic than makers of durable Although normally a third quarter leader among employers these labour intensive companies are still suf severely from the effects of the recession Only 22 per are planning to increase staff while a very high per cent predict declines FINANCE INSURANCE AND REAL ESTATE The twoyear stagnant condi tion in the Finance Insurance and Real Estate industry will ex tend at least three more months Of those interviewed only per cent anticipate employment in creases while per cent plan staff declines EDUCATION PUBLIC AND PRIVATE The early staffing for the up coming fall school year will be absent in as the outlook for the education sector turns negative for the first time in eight years In this normally brisk ing period only per cent will be adding staff while a record 23 per cent indicate they anticipate goods although still lagging behind third quarter plans for the last seven years This sector for the first time this year now looks more optimistic than during the recession as 24 per cent will increase employment and only percent will cutback WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADES Wholesale and retail trades an ticipate a healthy rebound after two dismal quarters earlier this year In most years these businesses maintain an even steady hiring level in the second and third quarters For the up coming quarter 28 per cent will increase their staff levels while per cent predict declines creating a much brighter outlook than that of three months ago TRANSPORTATION AND PUBLIC UTILITIES The positive hinng mode re
