Hills Does anybody really care With all due respect to the musical group and the in dividuals who penned and performed the song from which the above words are usurped both in terroga lives beg answers The time is rapidly approaching for municipal elec tions and basically all we are hearing is the sounds of silence When one considers that just a short time ago the com munity of Hills and in turn Town Council ap peared to be up to their boundaries with issues that sup posedly needed to be addressed the current silence is almost deafening Granted the summer holiday season is upon us even journalists are allowed their day in the sun but surely issues that only recently demanded attention cant just be left to swing in a hammock of humidity These issues including environmental concerns within our community pro and anti development ac tivists and up to and including tax hikes which affect all residents dont take summer holidays With municipal elections scheduled for November it is time for those seeking municipalelected office to stand up and be counted not only the abovementioned issues but on any issue raised by concerned Hills tax payers Those to be elected in Halton Hills during the November municipal elections include town mayor town councillors regional councillors Board of Educa tion Trustees and Hydro commissioners Some time ago the Herald issued questionaires to the current elected incumbents and as yet we have had nary a reply The Municipal Elections Act is flawed in the sense that those seeking office only have to declare their inten tions between Oct 9 and Oct 11 barely a month prior to election time Yet prospective candidates or even those weighing their options can apply even now to solicit campaign contributions To date only Arthur has announced he will run in the municipal elections and Tom Politi has admit ted to the Herald that while he hasnt definitely made up his mind about seeking office he has filed to be able to solicit campaign contributions should he decide to throw his hat in the ring The Herald cares about what happens in our com munity and invites residents of Halton Hills to demonstrate just how much they care as well Write to the Herald with questions directed at any of the current elected municipal officials and we will con front them with your concerns and print both the ques tion and reply or the reason no reply was forthcoming Its our community Important elections are upcom ing For the sake of the community lets get involved Yes I Care Question to Question Question from Name Address Telephone Send Pen Pal Club CPOBox94I Seoul 100 Korea Blow against freedom Dear Sir A blow has been struck against freedom in Canada On June the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that unions can used forced union dues to finance politicking which most workers oppose This appalling decision means that the big union elite will con tinue to force duespaying workers to associate with the NDP and political causes which most workers want nothing to do with The facts speak for themselves only a small minority of unioniz ed workers vote for the NDP at elections but the NDP is the only party supported by the big union elite The case was fought for six long years by a courageous Cana dian Lavigne Opposing him were the Cana dian Labour Congress the Na tional Union of Provincial Government Employees the On tario Federation of Labour the Ontario Public Service Employees Union the Con federation of National Trade Unions and the Attorneys General of Canada Ontario and Quebec Unfortunately the Supreme Court of Canada sided with big unions and big government against freedom Despite this setback Merv and The National Citizens Coalition which paid his legal fees arent giving up the Tight They have established the Lavigne Fund to provide assistance to other vic tims of forced unionism across Canada There is no shame in suffering a setback while fighting for the cause of freedom There is only shame in shirking the fight We shall not give up the fight for freedom Yours sincerely David Somervi tie President National Citizens Coalition Turner questioned Editors note The following letter wax forwarded
