Hurricanes facing ice availability squeeze By STEVE The Herald Unless more ice time can be quired for Halton Hurricanes AAA hockey the organization may have to reduce the number of its teams These potential con sequences are a result of a meeting between the Georgetown Minor Hockey Association and Halton Hurricanes held June 27 at the Georgetown Civic Centre GMHA awarded Hurricanes hours of ice time per week for the upcoming hockey season six hours less than what was re quested by the organization and what was given last year Hur ricanes vice chairman Terry Brandt explained that because of the reduction of hours many children wishing to play hockey with the organization may be unable to This is more than fair said president Hal Pells con cerning the number of hours thai the Hurricanes wiil receive There are no early morning hours in the agreement which Brandt had earlier said were ficult for players to attend Pells said that during last year season 50 hours 4 000 worth of ice time given to ncanes by his association t utilized which he said was a shame because there are so many other groups which could have used it Brandt explained that 12 hours per week is not sufficient for Hur ncanes He stated that while he has been phoning around he does not know where he will find more ice time He has received 12 hours per week from the Milton Minor Hockey Association but Georgetown is the preferred loca because of costs and the ma jority of children involved with Hurricanes are from the mediate area While discussions have taken place over registration problems no conclusions have been reach ed Pells stated that the policy manual requires children to register with the GMHA first and then with AAA hockey if they choose to try out for the team If a child does make the team his payment is transferred to Hur ricanes but if he doesn then the payment stays with GMHA Pells explained that Hur have already had two registrations for new members which goes against the policy While he is concerned with this he said there is little he can do Brandt said he has had 80 registrations this year about half the number of last year s total Further registration will be at Milton
