to billion onethird of its cur rent size within the next two years Halton Peel Tory MP Garth Turner said Thursday In an interview at the vative national convention in Toronto Turner former chair man of the consumer and cor affairs committee and an outspoken advocate of deficit reduction cited deficit figures much lower than those projected earlier by other Conservatives projected federal deficit for the current fiscal year is 5 billion The total debt is billion When then finance minister Wilson brought down his budget in the spring he said he remained confident the deficit in 1992 would fall Region over local business Country Lane located on the Tenth Lane north of Regional Road 23 in Georgetown Council approved Monday the company s owner David well be permitted to continue operating the video store part of his business Other parts of the business include a mini golf course and dnving range Town Council made its decision despite objections from Halton Regional staff Since the video operation conform to location s designation in the Regional Of Plan Regional staff states the business can only continue operation if the video store is eliminated If Regional Council supports its staff position concerning the video store operation when Town Council s decision goes before Council for final approval then the Region could direct its staff to appeal the decision to the Ontario Municipal Board Town Planner Bruce told local councillors Monday In support of the operation Council approved an amendment to its Official Plan and the area zoning bylaw If the issue does end up before the OMB this tribunal will decide whethet the Town s Official Plan amendment does or t con form with the Regional Official Plan For Town Official Plan amend ments to stand they must be found in conformity with the Regional Official Plan Council followed the lead of Town Councillor Joe Hewitt in support of the continued opera of the video store Coun Hewitt said the operation is in a location that is in transition That means it s not clear what zoning the area should have he said Since the area is in a trans tional phase and the video store services a significant number of people in the area the business should be permitted to continue said Mr Hewitt Relying on the claim by Mr Tarzwell lawyer Steven Foster that if the video business was shut down the entire operation would collapse Hewitt said opposing the video store would benefit neither the owner nor the public Town Coun Cook was the on ly councillor to voice his Circus comes to town Entertainment and excitement will fill had been rever sing a bulldozer up metal ramps to a flat bed trailer when the seat of the bulldozer broke and Mr Robertson fell backwards off the back of the machine The right track of the bulldozer caught Mr Robertson and push him against the frame of the trailer temporarily pinning him as the bulldozer which had con to reverse drove off the trailer and tipped over to the continued operation of the video store He opposed the idea on the basis it would sent a message to the general public that council supports members of the public breaking Town bylaws when they feel like it Coun Cook was referring to Mr having full knowledge that he would be breaking the Town bylaw when he established his business the late 80s Mr Tarzwell only applied to the Town for the proper Plan and zoning changes a year after starting up his business Coun Cook reminded his fellow councillors It seems council is telling the public owners can put whatever they want in their buildings and then go to council for approval he said While acknowledging Mr Tarz well knew he was contravening the Town s bylaw and Official Plan Mr Foster said the owner needed to do so to obtain necessary cash immediately Mr Tarzwell
