Systems on tainview Road in Georgetown August He received a score of and took first place in the watt class This seven hour competition designed to judge the best car stereos in the area was participation following the ex ample that Terry Fox set Last year approximately people took part in the Georgetown run and raised a total of Mr Deeley admits the low par ticipation rate in the Georgetown run has always been a disap pointment given that the com munity is so socially conscious and community minded He along with fellow organizer Derek and Cynthia Green hope this years run will be different The three have taken a different approach this year by contacting all the public schools and urging them to hold their own Terry Fox run In Acton the support for the Terry Fox run is tremendous said Chairman of the Terry Fox run committee for Acton Jon Hurst Last year we had over 150 people and raised he said Acton is probably one of the higher moneyraisers per capita The year before the communi ty raised and Mr Hurst said the committees goal is to improve the amount annually though he admits thats very dif ficult to do given the high amount of previous years He said the committee also wants to emphasize the run as a family day which will be fun for the children Both men say they were very impressed with Terry Fox Im a runner myself and I know what its like to run a Terry Fox marathon but I am a completely healthy person Im amazed by what he did said Mr Deeley Terrys dream was that one day there would be a cure for cancer and to raise money for cancer research he planned to run across Canada His right leg had been amputated six inches above the knee after doctors discovered a malignant tumor Starting in St Johns New foundland on April Terry ran 26 miles a day but after days and 3339 miles km Terry had to stop running his Marathon of Hope outside Thunder Bay on Sept l 1980 because cancer had spread to his lungs stated a press release from the Canadian Cancer Society When Terry could no longer run organizations like Four Seasons Hotels the Canadian Cancer Society the Canadian Track and Field Association and Fitness and Amateur Sport Canada joined to begin plans for the first Terry Fox Run to con tinue Terrys dream Funds raised by the Terry Fox Run are administered by the Na tional Cancer Institute of Canada and are allocated to specific cancer
