fond of each other and when growing in the same soil live together in peace and unity Besides the three sisters the natives also grew tobacco They believes that when tobacco was burned they prayed CORN FESTIVALS AND FALL FAIRS The Crawford Lake festival of 1 weekend is a harvest festival For the natives of North America harvest time referred specifically to the corn harvest Com was so important Acts4 33 The message of the cross and resurrection is a powerful one Lets share it As ye also learned of Epaphras our dear vant who is for you a faithful minister of Christ 7 Would others say of us that we are faithful I pray so This is one of the greatest testimonies we can have But of the times and the seasons brethren ye have no need that I write unto you For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night 1 5 12 Are you ready for the second coming He could come today Trust the Lord how before it too late Chippewas had a wonderful yield of maize So abundant was their crop that they became proud ar rogant and wasteful They ate more than they needed they fed corn to the dogs and they let corn lie in the fields and rot Children used cornstalks in their play and then threw them in the mud When the people had eaten all they could eat they buried the re mainder of the corn and went off hunting But thought they saw deer and elk in great herds the could not catch or kilt any The hunters seemed to be shooting blindly Every arrow went amiss and the animals seemed to have twice their usual speed Without fresh meat the people soon ex the supplies they had brought with them Hunger was upon them Remembering their corn hid den at home they sent some of their men to get it But alas Mice had found it and had eaten the en tire store of maize Sorrow filled the hearts of all the people when the men return to the hunting camp empty handed Why are we being punished they asked themselves The continued to ask the question as they beat their drums and sang their holy songs One man among them had taken no part in the waste of the corn Instead he had grieved over the way his people had treated the maize the beautiful gift of the Master of Life Brooding over the greed and selfishness and of hi people he walked alone hi the forest In the distance he heard the sound of beating drums and of singing as his people tried to ap pease the spirits they knew they must have angered He walked on into a wild area of the forest where there were no signs of man Suddenly he came to a clear ing In the- center of a small meadow was a mound and on the mound stood a lodge made of chbark As he approached cries and grains coming from the lodge made him more and more curious Walking inside he saw a little man stretched out on dirty much worn hides Pale sick miserablelooking the little man began to speak See what a wretched condition these men have placed me in he said to his visitor I am their best friend and yet they have in suited me and dragged me through mud and dirt They have let dogs tear my garments In every way possible they have mistreated me That is why they are now want Friends cannot quarrel without inflicting wounds The visitor felt troubled for he knew now whom he was looking upon and listening to The weak voice continued Go back to your people and tell them what you have seen and hard I am the Spirit of the Maize The good Indian returned to camp and told his people He said The Spirit of the Maize says that your wastefulness is the cause of your own misfortune They listened to him and were sorry for their greed and wastefulness When the next harvest came tHey used it wisely and carefully Endnote Indian Legends of Canada Edna Clark repi THE OPEN DOOR EVANGELICAL CHURCH MEETING IN STEWARTTOWN PUBLICSCHOOL
