little easier Hills Councillors directed staff to hire a temporary crosstab guard to patrol Drive near the school Council made its decision after Max the schools cipal and Karen Walker a parent with two children attending Harrison told council of the danger children face crossing Drive to get to school Ms Walker told council a child was almost hit by a car last week while crossing the street At the urging of Mr and Ms Walker Council also directed staff to investigate the of installing a traffic light to ensure the school childrens safety However Town Engineer Bob Austin said the option has already been investigated and installation of a traffic light is not possible Despite the explanation Town Mayor Miller said staff should continue to investigate the possibility thereby keeping the Towns options open Housing statement urged Halton Hills General Committee recommended Monday the Town s Municipal Housing Statement be approved The Housing Statement outlines the percentage of types of housing the Town is projected to need over the next years General Committee which is comprised of Town councillors made its recommendation after hearing from Gail Rutherford President of local ratepayer group Residents Active in Development Decisions In the past has opposed the statement because group members claimed the housing mix projections were incorrect The projections were per cent single family homes per cent Townbouses and 20 per cent apartments However following a meeting between RAIDD members and Town planning staff the housing statement was changed to include the following housing projections per cent single family homes per cent townhouses apartments Councils recommendation will go before Town Council for final approval this Monday Cleanup okayed Town Council directed staff Monday to take steps to clean up a pile of construction rubbish illegally dumped at a marsh on the Trail west of Con federation Street in Glen Williams Area resident Brett Slade told councillors he was horrified when he found the debris beside the marsh last week He told councillors if the debris ever got into the marsh the aquatic and bird life would certainly be harmed Townhouse proposal urged Town General Committee recommended Monday a proposal to build three a t Church and John Street in Acton be ap proved despite hearing opposition to the proposal from area residents The recommendation will go before Town Council this Monday for final approval Church street resident Ernie Waller and John Street resident Bob told council the the townhouses arent in keeping with the single family homes and duplexes that populate the area They predicted more high density would be built in the area if the proposed development was approved However Acton Councillor Norm Elliott comments after local resident Guiseppe Gori uged Plan and Public Works Commit tee members to support a Niagara Escarpment Amend ment preventing United gregates from quarrying 75 acres of the Acton quarry site on the south side of Mr Gori who Is a member of local environmental group Ecology Awareness Group Landscape and Environment EAGLE has initiated the Niagara Escarpment Amend ment saying the area in question contains environmentally sen sitive areas Following Mr Gori s tion Chairman Pomeroy said he onginallj thought the amend ment was frivolous but he is not so sure now Although acknowledging the quarry com pany has a provincial licence to excavate aggregate from the land south of Sideroad 22 Chair man Pomeroy said the company has not been a good corporate citizen He points out United Ag gregates as part of Reclamation Systems Incorporated wants to establish a dump in SO per cent of the quarry Instead of carrying out a mean ingful rehabilitation program once the quarry is exhausted the company has turned around and wants to put garbage in it he said Following the chairmans lead committee members voted to defer voting on the amendment until staff had more time to in Region Council Dump downer The Acton dump proposal has received another knock This time from the Approval Branch of the Ministry of Environment According to an Approval Branch document obtained by the Herald the company behind the dump proposal Miltons Reclamation System RSI has not adequately dealt with issues surrounding Black Creek Specifically the Approvals Branch wants proof from RSI that the effluent discharged from the dump would be comparable to or better than the water presently available in the creek The proponent must also assess the impact of the chemical ox demand of the effluent on the dissolved oxygen levels of Black Creek according to the document In summary the proponent has not shown that the proposed discharge of treated effluent to Black Creek will comply with Ministry
