the HERALD Wednesday September Sports Page 19 Soccer action winds down darts competition begins We are fast closing the end of season Youth finished this weekend ladies finished this weekend Ontario Cup Finals finished this weekend and others down fast It docs seem lo have been a short season and it is Sixteen to twenty weeks are all we get Toronto and area do manage to have a few more weeks than we do We are better off than some of the extreme northern areas who can manage only ten weeks or so and have to travel longer distances than we do for competi tion The weather has cooperated for the most part and we have not had to suffer many recast games for that reason The town fields service has been pretty good and consistent and we have only had to contend with the odd moment of vandalism The major pro blem Inter County wise has been the turn out of one or two teams shortages of playing squads Seniors Falcons action are also coming to the end As I write the lads have one game to play The team lost last Friday with on ly eight players on duty and lost one of those to ejection Meteor Mariners and United have made the semi finals stage of the first division playoffs There could be a slight doubt about Merseysides final position and Eagles have to beat them at Brampton this Wednes day to have a fighting chance Eagles defeated Mariners 21 to keep their hopes alive United defeated Villa and Mersey and Meteor win by default over and Win chester Blazers qualify for the semis as probably do Gunners and with the last place to be fully set tled Call offs and lack of results keep the suspense going in the se cond division as I type away In town this Wednesday Ajax and Old Triangle do battle at at pm with Meteor and Villa following Cedarvale sees Mariners entertain hopefully turning up for the con test United go to Winchester Stingers go to Milton Gunners Blazers win by default over Laurent an and may be at for an exhibition with Milton In the ladies finals day Bramp ton defeated Bolton 10 in the ma jor competition Consolation win ners are United who defeated Acton Strongly fan cied Milton were taken to the last minutes by United before winn ing on Friday evening So much so that Milton lost two games on Saturday and were out of the running In the run in to consolation final United defeated Georgetown Blues and Streetsville lO Blues also lost to Bolton this on Friday evening although putting up a good op position No news is passed along from the other Georgetown team the Reds It is a little fitting that United have had a little success This is coach manager and general boss and sponsor Haddy Smedemas tenth year in charge of the team and he has devoted a Alex Tough great deal of time and energy to soccer in town and at the Provin cial levels of the game In his time has been in at the beginning of the Falcons Inter County youth and ladies soccer And he is still there DARTS The league are to put in their own stats this year and the column shal not dwell on these and simply pick out a few highlights from time to time as the writer sees them The Industrial league will carry over through the column as usual There are eight teams in the first division and seven teams in the second If another male team comes along soon it could be accommodated to even up the schedule Results so far are Cutters 5 Hustlers Ensigns 2 Westenders High Rollers
