help illiterate adults facing layoffs learn basic skills the Ministry of Education is giving the Halton Adult Learning Network a grant to establish a labor adjustment program The sixmonth program will help some workers who are losing their jobs due to layoffs and plant closures learn the basic skills required to enter a retraining program explained the co ordinator for the Halton Adult Learning Network Rilla Hewer When there is a layoff or plant closure a certain number of people cannot be retrained because they lack basic education skills she said When were asked to help well send an assessor to the workplace to identify exactly what skills the worker needs and then well develop a program for him or her to learn Programs will be developed using the contacts of the Halton Adult Learning Network which include the Halton Board of Education the Roman Catholic Board of Education the Halton Literacy Police seminars The Halton Regional Police Service will be presenting a series of Women Alone Seminars throughout the Region These seminars will cover safety topics for women while in the home on the street and in vehicles The sessions are open to all those interested in attending the program started by Oct said She estimates 150 adults may be helped by the new program which once established could have adults being assessed and learning basic skills in two weeks is the first region to receive funding for such a program said Ms Hillis who believes thats because the Learning Network along with other groups who have a stake in adult education immediately got together to develop a proposal for the labor adjustment program when the Ministry indicated early this year funding would be available for such a program In a press release issued by education minister Marion Boyd it was stated the 31500 grant given to the Adult Learning Network is part of million to help workers who need a basic edqeation Cancer car wash Wendys Restaurant in Georgetown will be holding a
