New baseball prez faces familiar problems By STEVEN The Herald Although Donna Blight is the first female president of the Georgetown Baseball Association B A she will still face many problems Ms Blight who became G B A president Sept 30 at the association s annual general meeting at Gordon Alcott Arena explains a lack of sufficient diamonds as well as a lack of quality upkeep on current ball diamonds are two major concerns facing Georgetown baseball This year we had an increase of over children and we the B A expect a similar increase for next season she said Unless more diamonds are built or become available for use within this time the G B A will be forced to con sider capping registration numbers for the season Ms Blight stated that during talks with the Town of Hills it was explained that no new baseball diamonds would be built until at least She explained the crux of this problem lies with teenage ball players At times these players have had to use smaller fields adequate only for younger children and this is neither safe nor acceptable One other concern raised at the G B A meeting was the quality of diamonds The association feels the general poor condition and inadequate maintenance of playing fields has led to a major concern for the safety of players Ms Blight has been part of the B A for five years She has ser as the association secretary and moved on to being a director and then vice president of house league past two years You have to be pleased they have confidence in you but a little apprehensive about the level of responsibilty said Ms Blight about being named G B A President The Georgetown Baseball Association had a record season There were youth players ages 18 a season record as well as more volunteers than ever and full complement of sponsors Despite an uncertain future in terms of growth and facility A 1992 outlook is optimistic An extremely strong executive with more volunteers than ever is on hand for the season and the B A looks for ward to offering a great season of baseball fun for the youth of Georgetown Hopefully in the coming months some arrangement can be made between the Town of Halton Hills and the
