branches throughout Canada the USA and Ger many The Legion has a strong and continuing concern with Canadas ability to maintain a meaningful contribution to world peace- protect Canadian sovereignty and preserve na tional unity In addition to the half million willing pairs of hands the Legion has other tremendous resources Legion facilities can be seen in almost every community in the country Almost one hundred thousand Ladies Auxiliary members sup port Legion Projects with con tributions of many millions an nually Bursaries and scholar ships are offered to students from Secondary school to University level as well as from Schools of Nursing and Schools for the Han- Whenever and wherever disaster strikes the Legion is there with a helping hand Community service is a major endeavor of the Legion Branches and Auxiliaries con tribute tremendous amounts of time and money to work with youth seniors and the disabled Nationally Legion branches con tribute money goods and ser vices worth millions of dollars to charitable organizations and community programs annually The clock is ticking Be an Early Bird dont put it off any longer A Seniors Golf tourney was held between Branch 120 Georgetown and Branch 197 Ac ton at Acton Meadows Golf Club on Wednesday October 2nd The weather was good to the golfers and a fun in the sun day was had by all To recoup all that lost energy a luncheon was provided at Acton Legion Orval Paul Sports Chairman wishes to thank his caddies for their needed help that day of Acton and our own Shell Lawr Honors and Awards and Initia tion Night Saturday October in the Legion Hall At 800 pm the Color Guard and Initiation Team were piped in by George Grieg The color Sgt Eddie then gave the order for the candidates to be marched in After the Initiation ceremony Mike Sargent GIGIHONEE HAIR REMOVAL EYELASH TINTING favtit 21 Mill Acton the new members to the members present Brian Cox Jeff Sargent David Robinson and Samuel Arthur were presented with their Legion badge and By laws by President Bob and Membership Chairman Mike Sargent President Bob then of fered a welcome to the new members He reminded us that the Legion was first formed in by con cerned veterans for their fellow comrades in arms and in 1928 Branch 120 received its Charter During the last five years Branch has donated back into the community of Georgetown Extending the right hand of friendship to our newest comrades President Bob told them that our annual Poppy Campaign will be starting shortly and he hoped to see them out as volunteers Honors and Awards Chairman Fred Tut Harrison presented the Past Officers medals to the following 2nd Vice President Bob McNeilly and Sgt atArms Harry Bottoms He then presented the following Service pins Ordinary members Hall and Albert Porter 20 years Associate members Leanne Hall and Art Cousins years At the conclusion of the evenings ceremonies the Color Party and the Initiation team were piped out by piper permission of Mr Jack Muirhead of the ALS Socie ty of Ontario I wish to expand the information on lateral Lou Gehrig Disease As stated in the Legion of February 1989 an in vestigation was triggered by the clustering of ex personnel serving in the Halifax area The point was made that all ex ser vice personnel diagnosed with to apply for disability pen sion on this basis Symptoms Motor nerve from the brain whither and die consequently the muscles atrophy and a person becomes more and more disabl ed A person remains mentally alert since the intellect is not af fected but becomes unable to walk unable to dress or feed themselves unable to swallow or speak and eventually unable to breathe At present there is no known cause or cure nor is there any treatment which will slow stop or reverse the effects of More men than women are generally stricken and the onset seems to increase with age the mid50 s In particular we wish to have- Veterans and their families aware of the existence of this disease and whether due to bet ter diagnosis or not the disease does appear to be more prevelant now than in years past Medical research is ongoing and assistance is given to those afficted through
