the HERALD Community News Wednesday October 1991 Special anniversary By KAY WILSON United Church held its 102nd anniversary on Sunday There was a full congregation with many visitors Rev Ann conducted the ser vice The guest speaker for the day was Rev Hugh from Hamilton He was introduced and welcomed by Marilyn Smith Hugh had served his internship in the Home Huttonville pastoral charge in 198687 The children enjoyed the story with Hughs puppet William wearing a Halloween mask The title of the sermon was One Free Gift With This Sermon The Choir was assisted by the Home Church Choir and led in the singing of the hymns Their musical selection was call ed Our Eternal King Charlie Forsyth introduced Dennis Van Ravens organist of Home Church who played the organ prior to the service During the service Alan organist and choir leader played the organ and was assisted by Dennis on the piano for the hymns The new Allen digital organ was dedicated during the service by the minister Rev Ann and she was assisted by jean Dunlop After the service lunch was provided by the ladies of the church and it was a time for fellowship and renewing old ac- Trip to England Brad and Joan Carter of have returned from a trip to England and Southern Ireland While in London they stayed with their daughter Janice soninlaw Peter and grandchildren Helen and Simon Couples Club The Couples Club of United Church held its Oct 24 meeting with a pot luck supper at the church Couples Club president Fred Clarkson and Fred and Helen Paul arranged the evening Following the dinner Ford called in his sister Cavell guest speaker for the evening Cavell is a missionary in Thailand home on furlough and will be returning at the end of December called Thailand the City of Smiles She teaches Christian Religion in the Bible College located in a new twoyearold building Construc tion is everywhere in Bangkok now being developed fast and the economy is improving Cavells mission work is through the Pentecostle Church She said the family unit is almost nonexistent mostly one parent family units most of these children attend Bible College She said the children in Bible Col lege live in Hope and Peace The majonty of the population are very poor except for a few who are involved in drug trading Buddhism is practised by most people The rivers are highly polluted but the people still bathe and wash their clothes there River boats are everywhere and some are floating markets Work projects are made in a bank four people are involved before your cheque is cashed Men and women work equally men high and women low doing most of the field work Rice is the main crop further south fruit trees Betty Johnson thanked Cavell and presented her with a gift Newfoundland cause Communities always seem to pull together in times of tragedy and Hal ton Hills is no exception Ralph and Betty Buttons are owners of the Newfie Store in Georgetowns Moore Park Plaza and are one of many businesses donating time and talent to raise money for a liver transplant for a oneyearold Newfoundland youngster The Buttons first heard of the plight of oneyearold Justin John son over the Friends and Neigh bors radio show on 530 CI AO We were on holiday at the time and we heard about Justin through Bob Cousins on Friends and Neigh bors We asked if we could do anything to help said Betty But ton Jason is now in Londons Victoria Hospital He is awaiting a badly- needed liver transplant which he could not receive at Cambridge Memorial Hospitalin Newfoun dland where he was living with his mother Justin suffers from a rare genetic disease tyrosinemia The disease causes a severe liver disorder which is contracted in infancy The Buttons along with many Brampton businesses will be par ticipating in a benefit scheduled at the Inn in Brampton this Saturday from 12 to 1 am Ac tivities include live music and a flea market Peggy manager of Inn said she was ap proached by Winston Budden one of theDJs in her bar Winston approached me about a fundraiser We have a lot of Newfoundlanders patronizing our bar and we wanted to do something said Ms Hegyi The Georgetown Store is setting up a booth at Rosetown Inn which will display some of the products featured in the store They include Newfoundland books tapes- handmade crafts Newfoundland and nonperishable foods Mr Button also said they will be donating a percentage of their sales to the Justin Johnson Fund Some other businesses involved with the fundraiser are Brew a Brew in Brampton which will be giving a donation and free brew kits Westwood Chev Olds at the Dixie Auto Mall donating for car sold to people who listen to Friends and Neighbors and the Manhattan Hobbo who is also holding a benefit on Nov 17 Mr Cousins host of Friends and Neighbors said Mr Budden was the sparkplug who got the whole thing together I was asked to promote it but Winston was the organizer he said Mr Budden said the reason behind his interest was because he was a caring Newfoundlander But you dont have to be a Newfoundlander when it comes to caring for a child he said Framed by nature From the other side of the street Norval United Church Is naturally framed by the arching branches of trees The scenic church was a place of celebration Sunday as members took part In festivities to commemorate the churchs an niversary The church which was built for a Methodist congregation became a Uhlted church In 1925 The congregations current pastor is Rev Ann who led the celebrations which included the dedication of the churchs new organ Herald Photo Halloween dance best ever By BETTY SOJKA Holland Tulips a camper canoe head baseball players witches a hippy nuns and Frankenstein are just a sampl ing of the characters that descended upon the community centre for last Saturdays Hallo ween Dance Being touted as the best ever in the long history of Halloween dances this event was a sellout Shane Andrews of S and S Sound along with DJ George were there to get the party started just right They supplied all the great tunes to satisfy everyones tastes and kept the huge crowd in high spirits DJ George the costume judging Linda and Kevin Burnett clin ched the Best Couple category with their Japanese Lady and Sumui wrestler costumes Best Group went to a sheep flock of 10 with the Dwarfs complete with Snow White coming in second Most original was won by Grant Ward who came as a Glow Worm that really glowed Ron and Irene had to share the prize for the Most Funniest category Ron came dressed as a very sexy lady while Irene was a scream as a cigar toting man with a mask that brought giggles just looking at it Rodney Allan as an look ing Guardian of the graves com plete with skeleton face black floor length hooded cape and a walking staff that was topped with a skull of a real horses head which had a light glowing from within won a prize for the Most Also receiving a prize in this categtory was Victoria White as a very creepy looking witch with a green face blacked out teeth and a bloody apron Along with members of the Hall Board of ficial judges were Angela and Jane Buston who from time to time had to get the audience to judge by applause as scramble as bartender to keep up with the large attendance Dave and Michael Buckley and Alan Jr were a big help in set up and clean up The ladies who pitched in at meal time are also very much ap preciated Thanks go to Ron and Irene with their dona tion of potato chips Saturday afternoon was just a little too sleepy in the village for six horses who decided to liven things up by galloping through the village and then down the townline towards Acton It was the fifth line before they were finally rounded up and coralled until their owners could claim them Watch out for the October
