Publisher and General Manager 8772201 Copy in III COLIN GIBSON Managing Editor Si 00 ma Ml Time to plan ahead for future The ballots have been cast and the results recorded We now have a new Municipal Government The people have spoken and have decided who will best represent them for the next three years The election did not go without its mud slinging and name calling But that is now past and it is time to mend the fences and get on with making Hills the best place to live and work To the newly elected council we offer our congratulations But at the same time suggest take heed to what the voters have said The residents are concerned over development water the dump taxes and traffic flow You the newly elected council must work on our behalf and find the solutions to these problems The key to resolving turmoil is communication In the past council has found it difficult to communicate what is happening and why It is now time that you learn the art of communication and keep your town informed For the sake of the town and its future you must take a firm hand Govern with authority communicate to the people what is happening and encourage the special interest groups to work with the Town Your task is not an easy one as each and every citizen and group has their own concern and agenda BUT you must do what is best for the Town The special interest groups must work with the new coun cil to make this a better community Over the past several months the special interest groups have taken a them against us approach to the com munity Well the election is over the citizens have spoken It is now time to work together to build a better Town Confrontation is not the answer- working together is If we want proper development that will enhance our com munity and bring not only jobs but prosperity we must learn to work together To the special interest groups we say Give your new council a chance Work with them folks Community Forum Will the recession affect Christmas shoppings DOROTHY GOULD BLUE SPRINGS FLOWER AND GIFT SHOPACTON Im not really sure Mine is the type of business that you cant really be sure about until two weeks before Christmas HENRY H and H CLOTHINGGEORGETOWN I dont expect it to affect my business personally My sales have remained stable so far I can only speak for myself MARGE SIBMAN GEORGETOWN PHOTO We are not expecting any decline in sales compared with last year at all Thats about all I can say right now DEBBIE KILMER HALLMARK GREETINGS AND In the broad spectrum I think people are more conservative with their buying But I believe the need to express the Christmas spirit is still there and if they cant afford to buy a gift I believe theyll still buy a card so I dont think the recession will affect card shops like this one Peoples Forum POWER replies to critic Dear Editor POWER stands for Protect Our Water and Environmental Resources so we are interested in protecting the environment as well as stopping the dump I didnt see Mr Courchesne rushing to complain when presented briefs to the Board of Education the Niagara Escarpment Com mission or the Ministry of the En vironment on Environmental Assessment Act changes Check the questionnaire Eight out of questions have a bearing on the environment Some other groups have also raised these issues Therefore Hickory Falls Silver Creek Valley Environmental and Main POWER defended To the Editor In response to Mr letter regarding attempt to gel the candidates on record I feel every individual has the right to ques tion the candidates Since many voters do not have the ttime to call each candidate this ques tionnaire is well within the scope of what a citizens group should be doing I have seen the questionnaire and would expect candidates to be pleased to have written ques tions so that they could think about the answers The newspapers have not dealt with specifics and so this leaves most voters with insufficient This questionnaire should be met with encouragement not dis dain Eight percent of the questions were related to water and the en vironment Those are the issues that I expect to pur sue This is an excellent idea although I do wish that POW had done this earlier in the campaign so that it could have been distributed more wide ly and encouraged more debate Good for you for helping to clarify the issues Yours truly Lois Street South residents were con tacted for information They however did not write any of the questions ICE and can neither take blame or credit for this questionnaire since they were not contacte and knew No money was spent The only thing that was spent was my time which I volunteered because I thought the newspapers had only dealt with general issues The photoco pying was free courtesy of a local business that thought this was a good idea What is so terrible about asking the candidates where they stand We have not evaluated the answers We felt that the can didates were answering freely Some chose not to answer I think mostly because of time and for that have no criticism ER has not and was not supporting any candidates Members of POWER however do not give up their rights as citizens when they take out a membership They can still put up signs Someone on our board had a sign up for Mayor Miller They could still sign nomination papers as did another member of our board and I hope they cannot be intimidated into sitting by silently unable to ask questions Sincerely Barbara President Historical society- demanding action Dear Editor Recently in response to a phone calf from a watchful neighbour Esquesing Historical Society notified the Ministry of Culture and Communication that the Barber historical plaque had been imaged a result of the road construction underway on the Maple Avenue extension The Ministry subsequently removed the plaque as it was considered beyond repair Due to the large backlog of plaques waiting for at tention it may be as much as two years before the Barber plaque is once again in place con siders this to be an unacceptable length of time for the Barber Paper Mills and the Credit River Dynamo to go unheralded The Town of Hills through the office of Mayor Russell Miller has been asked by to put up a temporary sign We have every expectation that this will be done the very near future Yours truly Karen Hunter President Thanks for support Dear editor On behalf of the Association of Early Childhood Educators Branch I would like to thank you very much for your participation in the Ninth Annual Kids on Cloud 9 Each year this event has made many of
