cultivating positive selfesteem and a positive selfimage in our children We know we should en courage not discourage give praise not criticism show ceptance not disappointment and so on So why spite of our good intentions good education and good examples do we yell at our kids something like this Darn it you just messed up again cant you do anything right Now Ill have to fix it up We know that a statement like that diminishes a positive selfimage It creates a sense of failure in competence and hopelessness in a child Often after we blurt it out it creates the same negative feelings in us as parents So why do we do it a It is a familiar pattern of behavior we learned our childhood and carried into adulthood b On some level of con sciousness the message is not for our offspring but rather for our personal inner child c We have just had a fight with our spouse and that is the person who has really disappointed us d We have been up all night with the baby and we are just overtired Well the answer can be any of the above or any combination of similar factors The point is the better we have our own needs met the better job we do as parents Therefore the more in sight we have into our own childhoods and relationships with our parents the more capable we become Similarly the more sup port and cooperation from our partner the better our own self- image enabling us to impart bet ter messages to our own children More about how to improve our own sense of competence and selfesteem next time Valerie Cunningham a nurse in Independent practice offers a variety of parenting courses
