the Herald Wednesday November Community Controversy swirls around McNab burial ground The Herald The Town of Hills should take over the upkeep of the old abandoned McNab burial ground on Road in Norval claims Bruce a family descendant The burial grounds protection has become an issue because Nor val resident Julian Reed has sub mitted an application to the Town to establish a five lot plan of sub division in the area of where the bunal ground is reported to be located Unless the Town takes steps to preserve the bunal ground Mr Reeds plan could eradicate the plot said Mr McNab In response to direction from Town planning staff Mr Reed has done a study to deter mine the boundaries of the ground and if any bones remain Contacted Monday Mr Reed said the study has been submitted to the know when the results would be released He did say some test scrapings had been done in which top soil was removed in an attempt to find any grave shafts However none were found Mr Reed said However I have reason to believe there is one burial without a headstone on site he said Town Planner Glen said Monday the ground did exist but two questions still remain One centres on the burial grounds exact location and the other on whether or not any bones remain buried on site Mr McNab some of the bones in the McNab bunal ground were transferred at some point to the Hillcrest in However he is convinced some bones are still buried in the ground Dan Town Administrator said if bones still remain on site then the Town is obligated under provincial legislation to oversee the cemetary because it is no longer operated by a congregation or any other group or indivdual According to Mr McNab the bunal plot dates back to the first half of the when Captain James received a land grant for his was sent to the Town dated Oct Mr Mc Nab I realize that some bones and tombstones were moved to and interred in Hillcrest cemetary Most of the stones were thrown off the cliff down to the river s edge
