the HERALD School News Wednesday November 1991 Rebel Review Students at becoming environmentally aware By TESTA Herald Special The depletion of the ozone layer the cutting of the rain forests air pollution nuclear energy trapping endangered species These are on a few topics that students are learning about in Environmental Geography Now more than ever humans are having major problems with their environment the depleting ozone layer to major oil spills in our oceans we are now surrounded by environmental catastrophes When is it going to stop When are people going to realize what is going on Maybe never but now young children are being educated and they are learning things about the environment at a very young age It not a bad idea educate the little people so that when they grow up will have some sense of stewardship toward their Earth Well it sounds good but no one can real ly predict the future and if in fact be able to do something about it At Georgetown Distnct High School there are a series of geography programs but one stands out in particular The Grade 13 Environmental course I enrolled in it myself and I have learned more about the myself and others in three months than in all the years I have gone to school This course is different than most It teaches us to think and feel for ourselves The class involves many discussion periods where the teacher talks to us about various issues combined with fact and personal knowledge we are very informed and then we are able to give our opinions and ask ques tions We also present seminars in front of our peers regarding issues that affect our environ We do a lot of the research reading thinking and listening in this course and that is how we learn There is a kind of freedom you get in this class not like in English where you are told what to think not like in math that is just an equation we think for ourselves and that is the best part of all This is the way we are learning about our environment through education Of course it does not mean thai we are going to fix all the damage that has been done when we go out into the real world it simply means that we will understand and know more about it What we can try to do is to pre vent the environment THE CORPORATION OF THE Town of 1 H Bo Hills HALTON HILLS 8732600 PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE PROPOSED EXTENSION OF THE 5 SIDE ROAD CULVERT AND RELATED implications of restructuring Grade 9 This is one aspect of the Transition Years initiative cur rently being considered by the Ministry of Education We shall also have an op portunity to hear about tion from Cooper one of our own Instructional Con sultants Damian who was previously at the Ministry has spoken all over the province on this topic In addition teachers will have a chance to try out some of the new technologies that are available for classroom use For example the GDHS library has a CD ROM which has the capacity to store a whole encyclopedia on one computer disc There will also be a series of mini workshops hosted by teachers Some of these topics elude team teaching student peer tutoring and classroom management What I find most pleasing about this event is that it has been total ly planned by our staff and over a dozen of our own people are do ing presentations In addition to learning new skills and knowledge our teachers are also exercising their own leadership in the
