business with beauty By TESTA Herald special As you may already know there has been a new program in troduced to the GDHS cur riculum the cosmetology course taught by Mrs Dell On Nov this course was officially recognized by a number of very important people who attended an open house The cosmetology course offers students a chance to team about hair care nail care hair design health the scientific aspect of these things as well as the business side of running a beauty shop At this gathering about 80 people attended The turn out was quite good and consisted of school trustees teachers the ar chitects who designed the studio officials from the Board of Education parents and a guest speaker Students helped Mrs Dell out by running workshops throughout the evening that displayed dif ferent aspects of the program For example there was a science display Students did a pH scale test that showed the acidic quan tity in certain chemicals that are used in the class The second display was focusing on skills This basically means the hands- on experience the students have in class In this particular display students were braiding manmquin heads hair Thirdly the computers were also part of the displays The computers in this course play a major role in developing a business understanding that is re quired when on starts any kind of business There is the New Im ages computer that does a before and after makeover Students can experiment with different color and lengths of hair as well as experiment with a makeup make over The second computer that is us ed is the business computer which mainly deals with the economic and business aspects of beauty salon And finally the Text Book Computer which actually allows students to wnte their tests on the screen and the the machine marks the answers you typed in The teacher is then given a copy of the test and the questions the student got wrong are printed out Mrs Dell finds this great advantage It helps me keep an overview of what kids have and have not understood in each unit Its been a big help Among the distinguished guests that attended this event a few teachers of our own should be recognized Mrs Tamas who is in charge of the coop programs Mr Brown was is in charge of drafting Mrs Weiss took care of the business aspect of the course and finally Mr Lawrence and Mr Davies the schools prin cipal the main coordinators of this event As sandwiches went around and people mingled they began to understand that cosmetology is not just a hair care and nail care program It involves many more aspects of beauty that students can learn about in their local high school Mrs Dell got very positive feedback from all her guests and she was generally very pleased with the turn out and the students participation in
