GIBSON rig Ed lor Local downtown at a crossroads Taking a walk down Mam Street in Georgetown over the weekend we were saddened to see seven store fronts The recent closing of Boughton Jewellers the announcement Bi Way bore locking makes wonder what will happen to downtown Georgetown We hid candidates running for council sfite when going to revitalize the downtown the Business Improvement Area stating it will do everything in it power to stop from moving out of the downtown core We hive had citizens snv we should put Farmers Market We have had developers present plans for tin re development of the downtown which include low rise condominiums high rise apartments to be discouraged But If nothing else the developers plans would allow the downtown core to survive Recenth it was mentioned to us that a seniors centre and in gallery could together be the downtown Why not use the old town building This move from the downtown is not something new This once vibrant downtown housed the local movie theatre liquor store and beer store is now losing it s Even the town financial office moved off Main Street tw ago and still remains vacant here appears to be an endless stream of unansw ered questions hasn t someone done something to stop this deca Why can Georgetown turn it s downtown street into another die or St Jacob can t downtown which has been used for movie sets be turned into a quaint area to attract tourists Why the town make architecture a condition for development Why hasn the BIA gone to the town and asked for assistance in saving the downtown heritage What Well first let s stop asking questions and trying to blame others for the problems in the downtown core The BIA should take a long hard look at the future of the downtown and put together a plan to it The BIA will not accomplish this task over night or by themselves will need the assistance of town staff developers and concerned citizens it s not folate But if wewait until tomorrow it mavnevercome
