has decided to place incineration as a waste diversion option on the backburner it has no plans to abandon the technology Halton Planning and Public Works Committee membeis Wednesday staff will focus its attention on developing a central composting facility to service the entire Region instead of working towards the establishment of an Energy from Waste LFW plant Halton Public Works Com missioner Art told com mittee members a central compost facility will have capacity to divert a sufficient amount of waste from landfill Allowing the dump to remain open for 20 years as planned landfill is located in Milton and is scheduled to open later this year Composting is a process in which organic waste material is con verted into fertilizer Comparatively incinerators burn garbage and convert it into energy Critics of incineration say the process results in the emission of poisonous toxins into the air This is the position local en vironmental group Incineration Counteracts the Environment takes its opposition to W plants Incineration supporters say technology has advanced to the stage that W plants no longer emit toxins into the air Burlington Regional councillor Bob Brechin took this
