Council cash for freezer By Frances Niblock While the previous Guelph/Eramosa Council balked at donating cash to help East Wellington Community Services (EWCS) build an extension to its Erin food bank, at Monday's meeting the newly elected Council voted to donate $4,000, as requested by EWCS, to buy a freezer for the food bank. Initially, Council said it could not justify donating money for "bricks and mortar" in another Township, but on Monday councillors said that since the main depot for the EWCS food bank in Erin supplies the Rockwood food bank, the money would be well spent. In support of the request, Mayor Chris White said there are many cracks in the system that people slip through, and the food bank is basically a "safety net." "We recognize the value of the (food bank) service and this is a way to assist the food bank. This will allow for fresher foods..." White said. Councillor Doug Breen, who said he was "shocked" at the number of food bank users, said there will be advantages for Rockwood residents to having the freezer in Erin. "The food bank (in 10 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, JANUARY 6, 2011 Erin) almost operates like a food terminal... that's what Erin is for Rockwood the biggest facility for bringing the food in, for sorting food and storing it," Breen said, adding he was surprised to learn how many non-Rockwood residents use the Rockwood food bank. Breen said there is a "massive amount" of people who are right on the edge, and if they can't get help at the food bank, it would get "really expensive, really fast" to provide government aid. He suggested that Council fund half of the request. That prompted Councillor David Wolk to say "shame on us if we can't find $4,000." Council voted to donate the full $4,000 half from the unused council donation fund in last year's budget, and the balance from this year's donation budget. Mayor White reiterated that he was "surprised and shocked by the gaps in (social) services" and suggested they get some information about food bank use from EWCS officials at a future council meeting. *** Council also voted to again donate two $100 scholarships to the Kiwanis Music Festival of Guelph that will celebrate its 30th anniversary this year. In agreeing to the Festival's funding request, the Township stipulated that the scholarships go to first-time winners, and that the recipients be residents of Guelph/Eramosa Township.
