In the two pattern dances skated on Monday, Nelles and partner Nicholas Lettner had a 10th place finish in the compulsory waltz, and seventh in the paso doble. On Tuesday, they placed ninth in the freedance, set to the music of Chicago. That led to an over-all ninth place finish at the competition. Heading into the competition, Nelles said they are "just striving to have fun and have the audience have fun with us when we skate," adding they were hoping for a top five finish. Nelles began her skating career as a five-year-old with the Acton Figure Skating Club. Asked if she was a natural, Nelles laughed and said "apparently not," but skating was something she loved. She began Ice Dancing when she was 10, and has had four pairs. "Hopefully, this is the final one. Nicholas and I have good chemistry and we work well together," Nelles said, acknowledging that they've done very well for a pair that has only skated together for four months. Nelles and Lettner qualified for the Junior Nationals with a seventh place finish in Novice Dance at the Skate Canada Eastern and Western Challenge, where they skated a personal best in the freedance. Nelles said she doesn't get nervous competitions anymore, and because she spends so much time on the ice they train at Ice Dance Elite in Scarborough competitions just seem natural, just with more people in the stands. Nelles is in Grade 12 at Loretto Abbey in Toronto, and comes home on weekends and special events. Novice Tanners finish first The Trendz Hair Studio Novice Acton Tanners completed their regular season with two more wins, in a first place finish, with a 22-1-5 record. Tuesday, the Tanners defeated Milton 3-1. Nolan Cree opened the scoring on a pretty pass from Stuart MacDonald, while Thomas Holmes added another on passes from Cree and MacDonald. Tristan Wight banged home a rebound on a Matthew Geim shot to complete the scoring. Sunday, Owen Borges recorded his fourth shutout of the year in a 4-0 win over Dundas. Spencer Booth led the attack with a hat-trick and the assist on Brett Hilts breakaway goal. Owen Kennedy had three assists, while Zach Booth and Matthew Geim had one each. Coach Joe Borges contributes the team's success this year to "a great bunch of kids who are learning what we are teaching." Defense Coach Colin Ashe couldn't be prouder of his four defenseman Hilts, Zach Booth, Brandon Hatt and Gabe Rowsell. Their strong play, along with solid goaltending from Borges has held their opponents to one goal or less in 16 games so far, and to only 43 goals total in 28 games. Weaver (2). Atom AE Tanners in third place The getconnected Atom AE Tanners played two of their three final regular season games last week, resulting in third place overall in their division. They edged Center Wellington Fusion 5-4 last Thursday, with goals from Devin Muise, Cameron Shoebridge (2), Jack Kennedy and Brian Secord. Assists went to Dylan Palmer, Chase Thomas, Muise, Luke Meihm (2). Tanner goalie Owen Ferguson was strong in net. On Sunday, visiting Flamborough Sabres edged the Tanners 2-1 with a goal from Muise, assisted by Michael Holmes. Goalie Matthew Adkins kept his team in the game with some smart saves. Head Coach Scott Holmes is extremely pleased with the Atom AE's 17 wins. He said the wonderful group of extremely talented players and who will go far in the next round. The AE Tanners start their first game of playoffs on Saturday on home ice, taking on the E/H Devils at 5:30 p.m., and on Sunday, at 12:30 p.m. when they face the Dundas Blues. Forward Coach Allan Kennedy believes the ability to score with all three lines also contributed to the Novice Tanners success. The five minor novice players Holmes, Geim, Kennedy, Evan Ashe, and Jackson Phillips have adjusted well to playing along side Spencer Booth, Cree, Wight and MacDonald and the result of 142 regular season goals has been something to see. NO NERVES NELLES: Acton's Rebecca Nelles and her Ice dance partner Nicholas Lettner skated to a ninth place finish at the BMO Skate Canada Junior Championships in Victoria, B.C. earlier this week.
