THURSDAY, JANUARY 20, 2011 THE NEW TANNER Don't feed the water fowl Goose bylaw? An "aggressive" new program to keep Pros pect Park clean includes spending $21,400 to hire two summer students to pick up after the geese, maintain the splash pad and washrooms and to cut the grass in areas the large grass cutting equipment can't get to. During debate on the budget item last Tuesday, Mayor Rick Bonnette said what is left behind by the waterfowl in the park is "brutal." Georgetown Councillor Ann Lawlor said she'd rather spend the money to get rid of the geese, not to clean up after them and asked what the Town is doing on the issue. Georgetown Councillor Moya Johnson suggested that a Town bylaw making it illegal to feed geese and ducks would take care of 90 per cent of the problem. Warren Harris, the Town's Manager of Open Space and Parks, said they are taking "soft" approaches to the problem making people aware and educating them not to feed the water fowl because it makes them "fat and lazy." He said similar messages will come out of the Black Creek Sub Watershed study and from Credit Valley Conservation and the Town hopes to "ride the wave" of that information. Harris said they will continue to oil eggs to 5 DOING IT THE NORDIC WAY: Anna Rosenmeier (left), Renate Dzieciol and Karin Brozic enjoy indoor Nordic Pole walking at the Dufferin Rural Heritage Community Centre every Monday and Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. Kelly Kennedy photo Get your flu shot? Halton Region's last regularly scheduled influenza (flu) immunization clinic will be held on Thursday, January 20, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the auditorium at the Halton Regional Centre in Oakville. With the completion of this community clinic, Halton Region will have held 10 seniors' and 22 community flu immunization clinics. " We a r e s e e i n g a n increase in influenza activity in the community. Fortunately, the influenza strains in this year's vaccine are well matched to the flu viruses that are currently circulating," said Dr. Bob Nosal, Halton Region Medical Officer of Health. "Getting the flu shot is the best way to protect yourself and to prevent spreading the virus to others especially to those in high risk groups. The elderly, children under four years of age, pregnant women, the morbidly obese, Aboriginal people, and those with chronic health conditions are considered high risk groups and flu can be a much more serious illness for them." Residents can still get their flu vaccinations from doctors' offices and walkin clinics. Be sure to call the location to verify their hours of operation and vaccine availability. While vaccinations are the best way to prevent illness, other preventative measures can reduce your chances of becoming sick. Cough and sneeze into your sleeve, wash your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol based hand rub, and stay home if you are sick. For more information on the flu or flu clinics, dial 311 or call Halton Region at 905-825-6000, toll free 1-866-442-5866, TTY 905-827-9833 or visit www.halton.ca/flu. prevent their hatching, but won't use dogs or falcons to scare away the birds or move them from the park, methods that are costly and not that effective. Harris said there are signs in the park asking people not to feed the geese and there will be more, but there are no plans for a no feeding bylaw, although staff could look into it. Acton Councillor Mike O'Leary said that since families and their pre schoolers love to feed the birdies, the Town signs should be in plain language, along the lines of "if you feed the geese they are going to die." Branch no. 197 Legion news By Wayne Young P.R.O. Comrades, As you may be aware the year 2011 is the 80th anniversary of Branch 197, but did you know, 2011 also marks the 50th anniversary of the Thursday night men's cribbage league? The cribbage league was formed in 1961 with a three man executive headed up by President Gord James, Secretary Newt Hurst and Treasurer Dobbie Frizzell. Congratulations to an organization that is still going strong. Well done, Comrades. A special thank you must be extended on behalf of the Veterans and members of Branch 197 to Sweet Molly's for their generous donation of Walkers potato chips. It brought a little taste of home to more than a few patrons at the Branch on Saturday. Comrades, the mailing address for the Branch has been changed due to the cancelation of the PO Box.
