THURSDAY, JANUARY 27, 2011 Two of three for Atom AE Tanners The getconnected.ca Atom AE Acton Tanners started the first round of the OMHA Playdowns on the weekend with back-toback home games against the Erin-Hillsburgh Devils and the Dundas Blues. The first game was a shut out on Saturday for Tanner goalie Owen Ferguson with a 2-0 score over the Devils. Jack Kennedy scored both goals for the Tanners, one halfway through the first period, and the other was early in the third. Assists went to linemates Brian Secord and Luke Miehm (2). The next day, the Tan ners hosted the Blues in what turned out to be a real barn burner that went into overtime. Both teams were battling for the puck and the game was scoreless going into the third thanks to some stellar saves from Tanner goalie Mathew Adkins, as well as some great back up by the Tanners defence helping to clear the puck. After some intense rallying by both teams, the Blues put themselves on the scoreboard at 5:01 in the third. Fighting hard to get that one back, Tanners defenceman Jon Bydevaate went in on a rush and evened the score with only 1:51 remaining on the clock. Assists were credited to Dylan Palmer and Cameron Shoebridge. Ending regulation time in a 1-1 tie, they went into a 10-minute overtime period, but the Blues managed to get a breakaway only three minutes into OT and landed another goal, for a 2-1 loss for the Tanners. On Monday night, the Tanners travelled to Erin to play the second of their two round-robin games against the Devils. Knowing that they had to win this one if they had any hope of continuing in the first round, the Tanners came out strong right from the start. Devin Muise opened the scoring with only 1:46 left in the first period with an unassisted goal. That got the momentum going, and Kennedy followed suit with another goal only 15 seconds later off a pass from Miehm. The Tanners continued to dominate the second period with some hard work by defencemen Joshua Hamilton, Ben Gray, Ryan McAskill and Bydevaate. The E/H goalie was forced to make many saves to keep the Tanners offence at bay, but that changed five minutes into the third when Muise netted his second goal of the game. This time, it was Shoebridge who scored, only 21 seconds later, after a pass from behind the net from Palmer to make it 4-0 Tanners. The Tanners continued to work hard, denying the Devils any goals to give Ferguson his second shut out of the series with the 4-0 win. THE NEW TANNER Sports with The New Tanner tinued their attack, but Chargers goalie Mathew Lantz made some huge saves on the Raiders shooters to keep the score close. At the other end, the Chargers offense came alive and started to get more pucks on the Raiders goalie but were unable to find the net. As the Charger's legs seemed to wear down towards the end of the game, the Raiders managed a couple of late tallies to make the final score 5-0. 13 Novice Chargers blanked The Acton The Doct o r 's O ff i c e N o v i c e Select Chargers travelled to Georgetown to face the Major Novice Select Raiders in the Chargers' first game of the season last weekend.
