THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2011 Homework help ABC Life Literacy Canada released new research findings concerning literacy in Canada from a report conducted on its behalf by national research firm Ipsos Reid. The report uncovered insightful perception on literacy from the over 1,000 Canadians polled. The Ipsos Reid survey found that 50 per cent of Canadian parents surveyed admitted to not feeling confident in helping their children with their reading, writing and math homework. Initial findings from the Ipsos Reid report released in August 2010 found that 93 per cent of Canadians agreed that literacy skills are critical to quality of life. "The numbers show that Canadians believe in the importance of literacy," commented Ipsos Reid Senior Research Manager Sean Simpson. "Despite this importance, the data reveals that many Canadians either don't possess the literacy skills or don't feel comfortable enough to use those skills to their fullest extent." Literacy is about much more than just reading and writing it is about how we communicate in society. Supporting literacy means that Canadians will gain the necessary skills to fully participate in their workplace, community and family. The Adult Learning Centre at Literacy North Halton is currently seeking volunteer tutors for our adult programming. THE NEW TANNER 13 Novice Tanners win/tie The Trendz Hair Studio Novice Acton Tanners started the OMHA playoffs with a tie and win on the weekend. After a two-week lay-off, the Tanners struggled to get their game going, falling behind 1-0 to Dundas after the first period. In the second, Thomas Holmes kept the puck in and Nolan Cree found Stuart Macdonald alone in front, who tied it up. Dundas went ahead in the third, Macdonald again tied the game on a splendid passing play from Spencer Booth and Cree. Dundas would not be denied and went ahead for the third time, but Brett Hilts made a game saving, end-to-end rush and tied the game with a minute left on the clock. The Tanners carried the play in overtime but could not find the winner and it ended 3-3. Sunday, Schomberg came to town, and again the Tanners found themselves down 1-0 late in the first, before Cree tapped in a great pass from Macdonald. Cree returned the favour in the second after receiving a pass from Hilts, he again found Macdonald in front for the go-ahead goal. Owen Kennedy picked up the puck behind the net on a missed shot from Brandon Hatt, and made a superb feed to Booth in front of the net who made no mistake. Before the second ended, Hilts again got loose and flipped a backhand in the top of the net to make the score 4-1. Schomberg capitalized on a couple of breaks in the third, but some timely saves by Owen Borges preserved the 4-3 win.
