INSTRUCTION: Guelph/Eramosa Township Councillor Doug Breen was taught the P.A.S.S pin, aim squeeze and sweep approach to proper fire extinguisher use by Fire Prevention Officer Bernie Liebig during a recent open house/spaghetti dinner at the Rockwood fire station. Frances Niblock photo Firefighters breath easier A week after handling the old breathing apparatus worn by part-time Guelph/Eramosa firefighters, Township councillors selected the company that will replace the equipment. On Monday, Guelph/ Eramosa Council awarded the $111,330 low-bid tender for 16 self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), 35 masks and 32 spare carbon fibre bottles to M&L Supply, one of eight bidders. The replacement program is "aggressive," according to Chief John Osborne who said they accelerated the purchase of new SCBA equipment to replace, all at once, what they are using now, which meets 1997 standards. "Anytime that a firefighter goes into a hostile environment, they should feel 100 per cent that their gear would protect them should something really wrong happen," Chief Osborne said at a recent open house/spaghetti supper hosted by the 30 part-time firefighters at the Rockwood station. Osborne praised the part-time firefighters as community-minded, team players who risk their lives when their pagers sound, which happened 256 times last year. Captain Rob Crosby said the 30 part-time firefighters at the Rockwood station all have another common characteristic. "I think in today's fire service, we are all little boys that want to play with fire trucks," he joked, adding today's firefighters need excellent emergency response skills, and a willingness to learn and continually upgrade their training. Chief Osborne said the next step is to replace the bunker gear, some that is six or seven years old and must be replaced, by law, after 10 years of use. He said the SCBA units cost over half of the approximately $10,500 it costs to outfit each firefighter. School bus safety is everyone's responsibility Each year throughout the County of Wellington, dozens of chrome yellow buses travel along nearly 500 different bus routes, transporting more than 20,000 students to and from schools each day. Wellington OPP advises all drivers to be alert and adhere to specific traffic laws when approaching a school bus. Children are often injured as they cross the road to get on, or after getting off, the bus.
