THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2011 Police/Fire Report Court date The 47-year-old Acton man charged in the second degree murder of his neighbour makes an appearance in a Milton court tomorrow (Friday) morning. When Eddie McGuin appeared in court, via video hook up, last Thursday, he was remanded in custody until the next day when he appeared in court in person, and was remanded to February 11 in the Ontario Court of Justice. A publication ban was ordered by the court. McGuin was charged after Halton police were called to a Mill Street West apartment on January 6, and found a male suffering from life threatening injuries. Rick MacLeod, 49, was pronounced dead at the scene. No cause of death has been released. No charge in replica gun incident A 14-year-old Rockwood boy was detained after firing several "airsoft rounds" from a replica pistol at three hockey players leaving the ice at the Acton arena on February 4 at 7 p.m. during a Peewee tournament An off-duty police officer saw the youth fire the rounds "real soft foamy pellets" according to Halton police, who arrested the youth and seized the weapon. The Youthful Offender was released unconditionally without any charges being laid. There were no injuries. Deer hit A possible car fire call at 3:06 on Saturday morning turned out to be an accident involving a vehicle and a deer on Highway 25, south of 15 Side Road. The driver was not injured; no details were released about the deer or damage to the vehicle. Faulty alarm? Homeowners on the Nassagaweya/Esquesing Townline in the 20 Side Road area were advised to have their monitoring company replace a carbon monoxide detector which sounded at 8:46 on Saturday morning. Acton firefighters were unable to determine what set off the detector. Phone scam alert THE NEW TANNER 3 Telephone scammers bilked three elderly Acton residents of $11,200 recently, using what police call the "granddaughter scam." A female calls the victims who unwittingly give the scammers their grandchild's name. In each case, the caller said she'd been in an accident with a rental car in Quebec and the rental company was demanding cash. One victim wired $3,900, and a further $3,500, and a second victim wired $4,500 by Western Union to a named individual in Montreal. A third victim became suspicious and verified her granddaughter's whereabouts before sending any money. To protect you: · Ask the caller for a call-back number and be suspicious if the caller refuses · Ask the caller a personal question only your grandchild would know · Speak to another family member before sending money ·Don't divulge financial information over the phone ·If you're uncomfortable, say no, and hang up BITTERSWEET CLOSURE: Marie Vickey, the Acton library supervisor of children's and youth services, locked the front door of the River Street branch for the last time on Saturday, sad to leave the Centennial project building, but looking forward to working in the new branch.
