Because of its energy efficient design, including a geothermal heating/cooling system, the $2.3-million library will receive a low-cost $1.8-million loan and an $180,000 grant from the Green Fund, which is administered by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. Green cash for new Acton library "We had to be able to prove that we could meet certain energy savings targets, Jane Diamanti, Director of Library Services, said on Tuesday, adding the grant money helped pay for a geothermal heating/cooling system. "It was very, important for us to get this money and be able to proceed with a green building," Diamanti said. The library held a `soft" opening on Tuesday with patrons eager to see the new facility with its cozy fireplace, inviting reading areas and state-of-the-art technology. The federal and provincial governments picked up one-third of the cost each in infrastructure stimulus funding, leaving the Town to fund one-third. Demolition of the old library, built in 1967 as an Acton Centennial project, began today (Thursday) and all evidence of the beloved but totally inaccessible building will be gone before the grand opening of the new building at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
