Police/Fire Fighting cancer through research Acton's April cancer campaign for funds kicked off on a hopeful note last Wednesday when Sarah Bouma, the Canadian Cancer Society's actingdirector of Research, Information and Support detailed how the money raised during the campaign will be used to help "outsmart cancer." "The majority of the money you raise in the community is going to research to try to make a difference and to try to change the course of this disease and how we treat it," Bouma said, adding it is all bolstered by the work of volunteers, including research volunteers. She said the reality of why they continue to rally against cancer is that research $18-million donated by the Canadian Cancer Society in Canada last year is leading to less invasive treatments and better outcomes. "Research benefits each cancer patient...and the tide is turning and people are living with, not dying from cancer," Bouma said, adding she is inspired and encouraged by the Acton campaign. While the Acton Branch staged the kickoff to encourage and thank its many volunteers who will go door-to-door this month asking for donations, tables were turned on them when officials from the Unit office in Guelph presented them with plaques from the Ontario Division celebrating their team work.
