A big thank you goes out to all the students who entered a drawing in the Branch 197 80th anniversary T-Shirt logo contest. All the entries were amazing, as Acton has more than its fair share of talented young artists. Congratulations to our grand prize winner, Mackenzie Caroll, a Grade 8 student at St Joseph's Catholic School. To the staff of St. Joseph's School, Branch 197 thanks you for your support once again as the Legion tries to involve the youth of Acton in the history of our veterans. All the entries will be posted on the Branch 197 website for your viewing pleasure, you won't be disappointed. Have you moved? On April 30 the Falcons swoop in from Hamilton for a rockin' afternoon of fun and merriment. The Honours and Awards afternoon takes place on Sunday, May 1, with our chefs serving up a tasty BBQ on the patio. Monday, May 16 is Branch election night. Plan to come out and vote, better yet, why not stand for office and help guide your Legion as so many others have done over the past 80 years. Have you changed your phone number? Why not drop into the Branch, reacquaint with an old friend or two, and leave your new contact information with the bar staff so we can keep you up to date with important Branch happenings. Can't make it into the Branch but have the internet? Visit the Branch 197 website at http://rclbr197. org and leave your info in the members' section. The Ladies Auxiliary is holding their General Meeting tonight (Thursday) in the Main Hall. Looking back at the sentiments expressed in a number of the T-shirt entries, I can only ask our members and citizens of Acton one question, "Have you thanked a Veteran today?" Submitted photo Cycling event in Limehouse The Town will co-host two cycling events this summer Canadian Road Cycling Championships and Festival in Georgetown in June, and in Limehouse in July. As a "race community" Halton Hills will recruit and train a minimum of 50 volunteers as ambassadors, coordinate a bike skills challenge in Georgetown, create and market safe bike routes, and coordinate community activities and promotion. Town staff report that early indications show "significant interest and support' with the business community who want to make it a community celebration, and suggested the Town play a "distinct leadership role" in coordinating current and future participants. Regional/Acton Councillor Clark Somerville asked staff to make sure the road races do not interfere with farm equipment during the haying season. In the Limehouse area, the July 2 race is a nine- kilometre loop which starts and finishes in front of Limehouse School and travels east on 22 Side Road to the Sixth Line, south to 17 Side Road, then west to the Fifth line and north to 22 Side Road. Somerville also suggested that organizers involve the Limehouse community. Trails booster, Regional/Ward two Councillor Jane Fogal said the events come at an opportune time as the Town as just adopted a cycling master plan to encourage people to get out and bike. "This seems like a brilliant opportunity..." Fogal said. Organized by the Midweek Cycling Club, the two Halton Hills races are designed to promote road cycling and partnerships with supporting sponsors, communities and riders. The events are expected to draw between 5,000 and 10,000 spectators. Staff will report back on the Town's roles, responsibilities and opportunities associated with the road races.
