Dorothy Rognvaldson Citizen of the Year Acton's Dorothy Rognvaldson, 92, cried when she was told late Tuesday night that she had been selected as the 2011 Citizen of the Year. "I don't know why I cried there must be lots of people that deserve it more than me. I only do what I do because I want to, not for any honour," Rognvaldson said on Tuesday, adding that she began volunteering almost 16 years ago when her husband died and she decided to "do something with my life" and not sit and feel sorry for herself. Rognvaldson, who moved to Acton with her family in 1945, said her earliest volunteering began with her church, and she continues to belong to the Trinity Activity Group. Hailed as a wonderful role model by many of her nominators, Rognvaldson is honoured for her 16 years as a volunteer driver for the Red Cross. She also is a volunteer driver for Wheels to Meals, visits the elderly, sits on the North Halton Seniors' Planning and Education committee, is a Red Hat Lady with the Leathertown Lassies Group and is an active member of the Acton Seniors Centre. For 30 years, she was a canvasser with the Acton Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society, only giving up the volunteer job this year. "On the days that I have nothing to do, I find something, like baking or knitting or visiting shut-ins. I like to keep busy," Rognvaldson said, adding her family is preparing to help her celebrate her 93rd birthday on April 13. The Rotary Club of Acton received 25 submissions for 10 different nominees this year, and a trio of past Citizens of the Year assessed the submissions and selected Rognvaldson for this year's honour. The Rotary Club is planning a dinner in Rognvaldson's honour. The CHRYSLER · DODGE · JEEP · FIAT LTD.
