THURSDAY, APRIL 28, 2011 THE NEW TANNER 15 Branch no. 197 Legion news By Wayne Young P.R.O. Comrades, Celebrate the end of April in the Games Room this Saturday, as the Falcons swoop in from Hamilton for an afternoon of good times and great oldies. Speaking of "Great Oldies", our First Vice and his wife, Dave and Joan Maloney are celebrating, (is that the right word?) fifty years of wedded bliss. Congratulations! Tickets for the election dinner are on sale and going fast. Get yours today. Have you given any thought to running for the executive committee? Now is your chance to help steer the Branch on the course you feel is best for the Branch and its members. No experience is necessary, just a desire to follow your heart is all we ask. The election takes place on May 16. With the end of April snow showers, does that bring May snowmen? Mark May 5 on your calendar, as the Acton Candlelight Walk leaves the Hide House parking lot at 7:25 pm to walk to the Cenotaph and place your lit candle to commemorate the end of WWII in Europe and to honour all our men and women who have and are still willing to pay the ultimate sacrifice so that we may sit at home and say, "Who cares?" The Candlelight Walk is open to all citizens of Acton and surrounding areas, and we would like to invite all our Veterans to the Cenotaph where we will have seating for those unable to stand. If you feel unable to walk, please meet us at the Cenotaph. Come out on May 5 and "Thank a Veteran." Legion Ladies Auxiliary Notes Good luck to Teresa and Sherri, Marg and Carol in doubles and Teresa in Singles, as they play in a darts tournament near Sarnia this weekend. Thursday, May 5 for the Candlelight Walk we will meet at the Hide House at 7 p.m. to walk to the Cenotaph. Please note the LA will not be meeting at St. Albans Church as we have in previous years. Everyone, please try to attend this walk. If you cannot walk just meet us at the Cenotaph and pick your candle up there for a cost of $5. Thursday, May 12 is the LA General Meeting, and also election night. There will be positions available so step up to the plate and volunteer to take a position in order to keep your Auxiliary alive. Please remember why you joined the auxiliary to help. Social Events: Susan has planned for a bus trip to St. Jacobs on Sunday, May 29 and on Sunday, July 10 to Stage West. Bring your forms with you to confirm your attendance, or give Susan a call. Please keep in mind we will need you to volunteer to help with the dinner for the Branch Elections being held May 16. We know we can count on you as always to volunteer your services. Thank You. Also, there is a banquet Saturday, May, 14. Call Dolores to volunteer for both days, or just one of the days would be a help. Our thoughts are with those who are not well, and those who are shut in. Yours in Comradeship, Peggy Harris, President to Branch 197 Ladies Auxiliary SKILLS OLYMPICS: Acton High school tech student Jon Van Oosten (right) earned a Gold Medal in Architectural CADD (computer aided design and drafting) at the Halton-wide skills competition and advances to the provincial Skills Olympics next week in Waterloo. Submitted photo Girls indoor soccer final The final game was played in the Under 13 girls division of the Georgetown Indoor Soccer League recently at the indoor soccer arena in Acton.
